CE Mark for World’s First Point-of-Care Diagnostic Test for Chronic Wounds
Genome-Wide qPCR Primers Ideal for Use with Intercalating Dyes Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) has introduced genome-wide PrimeTime®
qPCR Primers, ideal for use with SYBR GreenTM , EvaGreenTM , and
other intercalating dyes in qPCR assays. The PrimeTime qPCR Primers are the same primer pairs used in the renowned PrimeTime qPCR Assays, selected to detect and quantify gene expression in human, mouse, and rat transcriptomes. The shipped product consists of a pair of pre-mixed primers, normalised to five nmoles, supplying researchers with enough primer for 500 20-µL qPCR reactions with an efficiency of more than 90%. Pre-designed and synthesised at the time of order, each set of primers incorporates the most up-to-date sequence information, along with accurate melting temperature (Tm) and secondary structure predictions. Each is BLAST searched to eliminate off-target effects and to avoid the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Stephen Gunstream, VP Marketing noted: “With the emergence of next gen sequencing, the number of newly identified SNPs and transcript variations is growing exponentially. Because all of our PrimeTime assays are designed using the latest versions of the RefSeq and SNP databases, we’re able to avoid areas that could lead to inaccurate results. Inventoried assays often use older sequence information with primers placed on top of newly discovered SNPs, which can cause significant errors in measurement of gene expression fold change. Our assays are designed in advance but checked against current sequence and synthesised once an order is placed.” Since the same primer pairs are used across the PrimeTime qPCR Primers and PrimeTime qPCR Assays, the transition from discovery to screening is easy. When you need to achieve greater specificity and sensitivity for screening applications, you can simply select the probe-based assays. PrimeTime qPCR Primers are compatible with leading master mixes and have been successfully used under normal and fast cycling parameters. Primer sequence information is provided upon order and primer pairs are shipped within two to three business days. It is easy to order PrimeTime qPCR Primers through the dedicated PrimeTime qPCR Assay selection tool, or RealTime PCR tool.

Wound care clinicians’ calls for better diagnostic tools to aid wound assessment have today been answered with the CE marking of WOUNDCHEK™ Protease Status, the world’s first rapid, point-of-care diagnostic test developed specifically for chronic wounds. WOUNDCHEK™ Protease Status has the potential to revolutionise wound care by enabling early, targeted intervention and cost- effective use of advanced therapies designed to modulate protease activity. Systagenix is initially introducing the test across Europe, South Africa and the Middle East and can confirm that commercial shipment of the first WOUNDCHEK™ Protease Status test kits has commenced.
Developed by Systagenix Wound Management in collaboration with Alere, and designed to form part of routine wound assessment, WOUNDCHEK™ Protease Status is easy-to-use and provides results in just 15 minutes at the point of care. This enables the test to immediately influence treatment decisions and help clinicians target advanced wound care therapies more effectively by identifying when elevated protease activity (EPA) exists in chronic wounds.
Although widely understood and recognised as a key marker in wound healing, today EPA in chronic wounds goes undetected, as there are no visual cues for it. A recently published showed that chronic wounds with EPA have a 90% probability they will not heal without appropriate intervention. The estimated 30 million chronic wounds treated each year account for approximately 3% of total health expenditure. Until now, with almost 30% of non-healing wounds having EPA, the absence of a test could result in ineffective treatment choices, leading to significant cost to healthcare providers.
Professor Keith Harding, School of Medicine, Cardiff University, UK, and chair of the International consensus ‘The role of proteases in wound diagnostics’, commented: “Evaluation and assessment are the first steps every wound care clinician should take when presented with a chronic, hard-to-heal wound, but up until now we have not benefitted from innovation in this field.
With the introduction of WOUNDCHEK™ Protease Status, Systagenix has been bold enough to invest in the field of diagnostics, and I applaud them for doing so. The effective use of a point-of-care test for protease activity has the potential to revolutionise wound care globally. This makes the WOUNDCHEK™ Protease Status test result invaluable information that clinicians will need to have on hand when evaluating and assessing chronic wounds.”
