by Heather Hobbs IFSTL Set to Meet Global Food Safety Issues
The US Food and Drug Administration, University of Maryland, its Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) and Waters Corporation recently celebrated the opening ceremony of the International Food Safety Training Laboratory (IFSTL) on the University Campus – a groundbreaking public-private partnership that will apply government, university and private industry expertise and resources to enable food standards to rise globally. IFSTL provides hands-on lab training on evolving detection methods and classroom lessons on regulatory standards, bringing critical support to helping the FDA and foreign food producers meet requirements such as the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act signed into law earlier this year. "FDA looks forward to this opportunity to build global laboratory capacity. The International Food Safety Training laboratory will help to address food safety challenges world-wide through training and technical assistance," said Michael Landa, Director, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, FDA.
With World food trade, estimated at around $1 trillion, triple to that of
just 20 years ago, the potential benefits of this approach to global food safety challenges is viewed as essential if growing consumer demands are to be met.
Waters Executive Vice President Art Caputo said: “Waters is committed to improving the availability, quality and consistency of food safety testing capacity. We learned from our customers that there is a real need for help and support in understanding the diverse food safety technologies and standards that exist around the globe. Serving as a bridge between governments and industry, Waters approached the FDA and the university with the solution: a powerful public-private partnership that leverages the best expertise and resources to help build trust, collaboration and ensure the safety of our food.”
"This uncommon collaboration promises a powerful response to a serious and growing international concern,” said University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh. “Joining academic, private sector and government expertise makes a lot of sense, and is a uniquely effective way to build international scientific capacity and food safety.”

Sartorius Stedim Biotech (SSB) and Refine Technology, developer of the ATF™ System cell retention device have announced plans to develop a robust platform for high density cell cultivation. This platform will enable fast, easy connection of the ATF System to SSB’s single-use BIOSTAT® bioreactors.
The project is in response to a current market demand for more connectivity between equipment from different suppliers to enable development of efficient, streamlined systems. “We decided to work together, based on market feedback, to create a better platform for late-stage clinical and commercial-scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Our objective is to give our customers
the confidence of a well thought-out system featuring optimal and robust high-density cell cultivation via perfusion and concentrated fed-batch processes,” stated Christel Fenge, Vice President of Fermentation Technologies at SSB.
“The market demand for cell retention systems is expanding rapidly and we are pleased to be working with Sartorius Stedim Biotech to ensure that the ATF System integrates effortlessly with the BIOSTAT bioreactors.
