This exam is an additional exemplar that is not found in the English for Success Grade 9 Learner’s Book. As it is an unseen paper, it can be given to learners for additional practise in preparation for their end-of-year examinations, or alternatively it can be used for formal assessment purposes. The rubrics found on pages 50–55 in this Teacher’s Guide can be used to assess this exam paper.


Exam instructions


You must show the process of planning, drafting and editing as this will be marked. Present your final work neatly without any spelling or language errors.


Section A: Essay Choose one of the following options and write an essay of 5–8 paragraphs in 250–300 words. 1.1 Descriptive essay: My Aunt Rachel 1.2 Narrative essay: The mystery 1.3 Reflective essay: My favourite childhood memory

2 Choose one of the following options and write a transactional text of 160–180 words. You must use the correct layout and write with the audience in mind. Remember to focus on using language and spelling correctly.


2.1 Write an email to your local newspaper asking them to write more articles that show your school in a positive light.


2.2 Write a formal letter of application for a holiday job at your favourite store at the local mall. 2.3 Write the obituary for a school friend who has tragically passed away.
