TECHNOLOGY ENGAGEMENT

While traditionally, hackathons are designed to attract programmers and coders to develop software, the remit for the homeless events is wider – open to ‘the type of person who likes to get stuck into a chal- lenge and makes things happen”. Winning solutions at the first
Scottish hackathon included an app which helped improve of Glasgow’s ‘street teams’ giving them better visibility of rough sleepers across the city and provide better care to them. Homelessness is still a huge
problem in Scotland. According to Shelter Scotland’s analysis of Scottish Government figures for 2018/19, a household becomes homeless in the country every 18 minutes. During the same period, 14,043 children were in households assessed as home- less, that’s equivalent to 38 children becoming homeless every day. Over half of all homeless applications in 2018/19 were due to relationship breakdown or being asked to leave. Te Edinburgh event will be
held between Friday 17 April and Sunday 19 April, while the Dundee event takes place between 9 and 11 October. n
Hackathons are open to ‘the type of person who likes to get stuck into a challenge and makes things happen’ WHAT IS A HACKATHON?
l Hackathon events are a growing trend since they were first trialled more than 20 years ago. They take place over a day, or a weekend, with groups working intensively on a specific problem. l The idea has developed from being used by small groups of developers, to large competitions – with big
companies viewing the method as a quicker and cost-effective way to develop new technology. l In February, Highways England held a hackathon to find a new way of reducing road accidents caused by drivers being distracted by sun glare. The winning team’s solution used predictive analysis of sun glare,
identifying where it was an influence in road accidents, using the information to put actions in place, including variable speed limits at high-risk times. l Deloitte will be hosting a hackathon as a fringe event at this month’s DataFest, trying to find a data and tech solution to promote inclusion and diversity.
