order’ before playing a global role in helping to promote responsible tourism. He said: “Essentially, it involves
putting sustainability in all its forms – responsible tourism, but particularly low carbon use, at the heart of everything that we do.” He said that the industry must look for ways to ‘green’ what it does using existing technologies, particularly in respect of heat, light, power and transport. He mentioned the North Coast 500 (NC500) coastal trail – popular with touring drivers - and said wouldn’t it be ‘fantastic’ if a fleet of electric vehicles was available at Inverness airport or train station when visitors arrived.
“Ten, the entire carbon problem of the petrol or diesel engine, it goes away, straight away,” Lord Turso added.
MARSHALL DALLAS, chief execu- tive of the EICC, revealed that the prince’s team chose the venue for Travalyst’s UK launch in part due to its own sustainability creden- tials. He said towards the end of last year, the venue had managed to ensure that no waste was sent to landfill, including packaging, which is notoriously diffiult to recycle. Five years ago, the EICC invested in a building management system which has also reduced utility bills by around 50 per
cent, even though the number of events being hosted has more than doubled in that period. And he said that every event in future will now have an Event Impact Report. (For full details of the EICC’s new Step Change programme, see page 56.) Dallas said: “We’re delighted to
host today – it sits really well with our key themes of sustainability, primarily. We have for some time been operating this business under a triple bottom line approach which gives equal precedence to profitability, clearly as we’re a business and we need to make a profit, sustainability and our social outreach. But it’s a fabulous event, Travalyst, and led by Prince Harry,
so we’re delighted to welcome him here this morning.” In answer to the question
whether the EICC was selected because of environmental work, he added: “Certainly, our sustain- ability credentials are pretty well known, so yes, definitely. Tat was I think part of the criteria and I think it’s really interesting they hosted it in Edinburgh. Edinburgh has got a really ambitious target in terms of becoming net zero in terms of carbon emissions by 2030, 10 years ahead of anybody else in Scotland. I guess there are a lot of synergies with what they are trying to achieve with Edinburgh and, indeed, Scotland.” n
