Dates to do business
Learning and networking are the bonus at industry conferences
BY FIONA LAING W
ith a new event director at the helm, the Meet- ings Show returns for its eighth year.
Te show at Olympia London in June is expecting more than 5,000 indus- try professionals through the doors to meet 750 international suppliers and attend countless networking events, with Jack Marczewski in charge. Learning and development is
an important part of the Meetings Show, with 40 hours of free educa- tion sessions on offer. At last year’s show speakers made use of technol- ogy like augmented reality and used drama to help engage delegates.
Building on the success of its
debut last year, is Tomorrow’s Talent, which shines a spotlight on up-and-coming meeting and event planners. A panel of judges from the across the industry will select the 10 most promising entrants to receive a series of opportunities to raise their profile, provide net- working opportunities and peer- to-peer learning, and enjoy VIP attendance of the Meetings Show. Winning last year’s Tomorrow’s
Talent has given the victors pre- cious experience. Gracia Kabongo, who worked at the Association of Colleges, has received two job offers since winning and has recently started a new role and says how valuable entering was. “In life, it’s important to be recog- nised. Sometimes in our industry we don’t feel appreciated, and it’s not because the work we do is not important, it’s simply because people overlook the detail. It takes
patience, hard work and multi- tasking to succeed. Tomorrow’s Talent is the industry’s way of thanking you for all you do.” Fellow winner Ash Rowe, now
senior event logistics manager at IET, agrees: “Te award has cer- tainly given me a level of exposure within the industry that I would be unlikely to achieve myself. Te only challenge I’ve had is finding time to fit in all of the opportunities that have come my way.”

Te judges are busy sifting
through this year’s entries which had to be in by the end of February. Te Meetings Show’s education
programme picks up on a theme that is particularly topical – reduc- ing our environmental footprint. It will look at helping the industry address the 1.1m tonnes of food that the UK’s hospitality and food service sector throws away annu- ally, with the help of the Guardians of Grub resources from WRAP, the charity which works with govern- ments, businesses and communi- ties to deliver practical solutions to improve resource efficiency. Jack said: “Since our first show
in 2013, we have been making great strides to further minimise our environmental impact. All of our floor covering is recycled with 50 per cent being reintegrated by our supplier, for example. Yet, we can always do more, not only to help minimise the impact of the show,
