Town has its say on ‘big move’ proposals
Helping our town centre evolve
By councillor Simon Ward, leader, Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council
Masterplanning: Residents and businesses are being consulted on the town centre proposals
A number of ‘big move’ proposals to transform Sutton Coldfield town centre are being shared with residents, community groups and businesses. Urban design and planning experts
Tibbalds CampbellReith are presenting their ‘masterplan’ for Sutton Coldfield town centre, containing a host of major recommendations. These include closing Brassington Avenue
to through-traffic and allowing two-way traffic on Victoria Road and Queen Street, creating a series of new public squares, providing more varied office space and diversifying the town’s retail, leisure and dining offering. The consultation runs until Monday 9 March. The first phase of the masterplan was
commissioned in November by the Town Centre Regeneration Partnership and part- funded via Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership’s Towns and Local Centres funding, to help Sutton Coldfield adapt to the struggles seen in town
centres across the UK. Representatives in the Town Centre
Regeneration Partnership include Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council, Birmingham City Council, GBSLEP, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, FOLIO Sutton Coldfield, Sutton Coldfield BID, West Midlands Combined Authority and Transport for West Midlands. Leader of the Town Council and chairman
of the Town Centre Regeneration Partnership, Councillor Simon Ward, said: “Our community must be at the very heart of a reimagined town centre and with the input of residents of all ages, community groups and local businesses we will be able to move forward confidently, knowing that we are delivering a vision and masterplan that is something that people really want.”

Belfry appoints PGA professional
The Belfry – four-time host of golf’s Ryder Cup – has appointed a new head PGA professional. Daniel Warwick (pictured) joins the
team of PGA professionals at the resort’s acclaimed national golf academy. He has more than 15 years’
professional experience and has held positions in top golf academies in the UK and Portugal. Daniel, who represented England at
youth level before turning professional at 18, will be responsible for day-to-day operation of The Belfry’s golf academy and team of professionals, club fitters and retail staff.
This includes overseeing tuition, custom
fitting, academy retail, corporate tuition and the development of staff and the golf academy. He said: “To be part of such a high- calibre team at such a highly regarded world-class golf academy is fantastic. “When coaching, I understand
that everybody is different, and pride myself in finding logical explanations and easy-to-follow methods based on an
individual’s ability. “Small changes can sometimes make the biggest differences.”
Work is now well underway on the Sutton Coldfield town centre masterplan that, once complete, will set an aspirational vision and put our community at the heart of an evolving town centre. The Town Council and Regeneration
Partnership members have been encouraging residents, community groups and businesses to have their say on the proposed ‘Big Moves’ through workshops and drop-in sessions across the Royal Town and online at
tiny.cc/suttonmasterplan. Public consultation closes on 9th March so if you’re reading this column before then, please take a moment and have your say too. The ‘Big Moves’ presented by the lead
consultant Tibbalds CampbellReith showcase a range of exciting opportunities to shape the next chapter in the history of our Royal Town. These moves include altering the ring
road that currently constrains the town centre, supporting our shopping centres to diversify and reflect a changing retail and consumer landscape, and encouraging more leisure and community use. While the masterplan is being produced,
the Town Council and partners are working on shorter-term projects to bring more life and energy to the town centre through art and music, high-quality markets and pop- up public spaces for people to meet friends and relax in during the day. Watch out for these as the weather warms up. This is an incredibly exciting time for our
Royal Town as we continue to carve out the masterplan and drive a bright future for our town centre. So please do have your say.
