Chamber to host mayor hustings event
Hustings host: Library of Birmingham
The Chamber is hosting a hustings event with the Midlands mayoral candidates ahead of the 7 May elections. The event will take place on 17
March between 5.30pm and 7.30pm at the Library of Birmingham. Current mayor and Conservative
Party candidate Andy Street, Labour’s Liam Byrne, Kathryn Downs of the Green Party and Beverley Nielsen, the Liberal Democrat candidate, have all confirmed that they will be attending the hustings. The event will be chaired by
Andrew Carter, CEO of Centre for Cities, and audience members will be able to quiz the candidates on their policy plans in relation to
areas such as transport, planning and skills. The candidates will be asked to
set out their aspirations for the future of the West Midlands, with particular reference to infrastructure, innovation and business before responding to audience questions. Chamber chief Paul Faulkner
said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Centre for Cities in staging a mayoral hustings in March. “With the election less than
three months away, it’s vital that the prospective candidates use events such as these to set out their vision on how they intend to make the West Midlands the number one region in the UK to
live, work and do business. “In particular, this session will
offer representatives from the business community a platform to directly engage with the candidates and ask specific questions on the policy programmes they expect to roll out over the next four years. “More importantly, it’s essential
that we harness the interest generated from the hustings to spread the word ahead of the election. “Over half a million people voted
in the last one and I hope that number is even higher this time around as citizens in the West Midlands will once again have their say in electing the most high profile and influential politician in the region.”
