It’s lights, camera, action as bootcamp pilot is launched
The region’s independent TV sector is calling on creative talent from across the West Midlands to join an innovative new skills bootcamp. The West Midlands Combined
Authority (WMCA) is funding the innovative pilot scheme, in a bid to discover new talent for the region’s screen industry. It is working in partnership with
Create Central, which is a new industry-led body set up to help the region’s film, TV and games industries.
‘This pilot bootcamp shows we are delivering on the promises we made at the launch of Create Central’
Create Central members who
work in TV have shaped the bootcamp content and are offering real-life work experience for existing gaps in their businesses, with a guaranteed job interview at the end. The kind of jobs on offer are researchers, production co- ordinators or TV runners. The WMCA and Create Central
have teamed up with Solihull College & University Centre and Screen Central, who will provide the skills training. The WMCA is expecting to see 29,000 new, highly skilled jobs in the region’s digital and creative industries by 2030.

“We have developed a number of fantastic training programmes over the last few years and we are thrilled to have been recognised by ‘Sunday Times’ and ‘Best Companies’. “In our day jobs, we are
obsessed with matching the right people with their ideal roles, and for us to achieve this, we knew we had to make sure that all of our people were coming to work every day excited to be in their own ideal roles. “We have provided options
for our people to focus on their physical, mental and financial wellbeing, at a time and in a way that suits them and their individual circumstances.”

Mill’s historic bakery is back in action
The bakery at a mill which was inspiration for ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has been restored to its former glory. It has been nearly 150 years since
the original bakehouse was in action at the famous and historic Sarehole Mill. Now, thanks to H. B. Allen Charitable Trust and Arts Council England, the bakery has been restored and is open to the public. Visitors will be able to visit the mill
and pick up freshly baked goods made there and served up in The Millers Tea Room. Profits from the bakery support the Birmingham Museums Trust to continue to care for the city’s collection and to deliver its award- winning education programmes. As part of the project, Sarehole Mill
Freshly baked: Sis Kaur at Sarehole
has welcomed a new baker, Sis Kaur, to its team.
Alex Nicholson-Evans, commercial
director at Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “This is a very exciting time for Sarehole Mill. “The new bakery will provide a
fantastic route for local residents to shop local for delicious freshly baked treats, while giving the Mill’s visitors a very literal taste of history. “All this while also helping
Sarehole Mill to become sustainable! What better excuse to eat pizza or buy a loaf, than to help protect the city’s heritage? “We were blown away by the
response on our recent soft launch, despite the stormy weather, and we can’t wait to welcome even more visitors through the doors, whether they want to pick up a loaf to enjoy at home or stay for lunch in our charming tea room.”
