GARDENING DIARY FOR AUGUST & SEPTEMBER with Avon Mill
In the Garden I
t’s all happening in the garden this month! Many herbaceous plants are at their best, bedding and patio plants are flowering their hearts out and the harvest
from your fruit and vegetables is starting to roll in…. joy! August is a great time to enjoy your garden but also a good moment to cast an eye over your plot and decide if there is anything you’d like to change for next year – photographs or rough sketches can help as reference points if you are making changes in the autumn and winter.
Things to do in the garden ...
✿ Keep deadheading, feeding and watering your pots and hanging baskets. If you have any plants in your tubs which are looking a little tired, cut them back and feed, to give them a new lease of life and encourage another flush of flowers. Now is the time to take cuttings of patio plants.
✿ Collect seeds from plants you want to grow, particularly annuals such as poppies and pot marigolds.
✿ Deal with perennial weeds while they are in full growth.
✿ Keep cutting the lawn regularly but raise the cutting height to reduce stress and shade the roots.
✿ New ranges of spring flowering bulbs, like daffodils, tulips and grape hyacinths come into the garden centre late this month; buy them early to get the full choice of colours and varieties
✿ Enjoy all the amazing produce from your veg plot. Down at
the Mill….. Join us for a wonder- ful night of theatre. ‘Three Men in a Boat’ starring Giles Shenton Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of August @ 7.30pm Tickets £14 available from the garden centre.
