35 On the Friday bus route... Peter Pam
Peter lives in Frogmore and was using the bus to travel to Morrisons in Kingsbridge. He said: “I’ve picked up the shopping for my two disabled sisters as I’m their carer. I get the bus twice a week and rely on it for shopping for the three of us.” Last year Peter raised £1,500 for The Coleridge Bus with a coffee morning part sponsored by Morrisons in Kingsbridge, and raised another £400 a few weeks ago. He’s planning to organise a cream tea next year to raise funds. He added: “We’re like one happy family on the bus – we all help each other. Everybody needs it. The drivers are so friendly and helpful, we couldn’t wish for a better team.”
Pam lives in Chillington and had been to the bank and then on to Morrisons for her shopping. She said: “It’s a very important bus service. They pick you up and help with your shopping, it’s great. “We go out on day trips too. Last Sunday we went to Beesands Chapel for afternoon tea and we’ve been to Otter Nurseries a couple of times. It’s great to get out and you get to know people on the bus.”
Percy was travelling to Kingsbridge from Frogmore. He said: “My mum, Mrs Joan Stone, was one of the originals on the bus in the 1980s. I used to get on and help mum with her shopping. Now I use it to get my own shopping. “I’ve been travelling on the bus for 30 years. I can go in and out on Stage- coach buses but this service is much nicer and friendlier. “When mum and me lived in Hallsands the Coleridge Bus was a god send.”

Sandy lives at Beesands, which the bus route serves on a Friday. She said: “I’ve done a bit of shopping and had a coffee with a friend, sometimes I do more. “This bus is very important because I don’t drive. Friends will take me places but it’s great to be independent. “I’ve been using the bus for 25 years. If this wasn’t here I’d either have to walk over the hill to Torcross or take a 45- minute walk along the narrow road to Stokenham. “I’ve made friends on the bus. I met Eveline on the bus and am going out with her for a meal today.” Eveline, at 98, is the oldest bus passenger. She said: “We’re so lucky, this is such a wonderful service. All the drivers are wonderful, they can’t do enough for us. “My son helped organise a Sunday afternoon trip to Beesands with the bus and everyone’s asking when we can do it again.” Eveline is an artist who served with the British Red Cross during the Second World War at Portishead, where she met her late husband, American serviceman Robert. She drove until she was 90, around the USA in her red Saab. She travels on the bus for her big shop at Morrisons and to meet for coffee with her friends. The bus was picking up her friend Jamie, and the three ladies – Eveline, Jamie and Sandy - were off to lunch together, dropped off, of course, by the Coleridge Bus.
