58 Follow The Post’s very own ( and very brave!) Amanda Bloomer’s journey FROM Fat TO

How to describe my last two months? Definitely mixed but, without Claire, the story could have been very different! 6 weeks ago, shortly after my last column, I damaged my right arm/ shoulder lifting and it would have been so easy for me to just give up at that point – ‘no, it hurts too much, can’t exercise, will probably do more damage’. And, not that long ago, I would have seized on just such an excuse but I am no longer that woman. Couch potato is my past, not my future… Claire very carefully monitored what I could or couldn’t do; re-planned our sessions to concentrate on other areas which were not affected so I have still maintained a regular fitness regime and, very helpfully, taught me gentle physio-type exercises I could do myself to aid recovery in my arm/shoulder. Under her guidance, I have grad- ually reintroduced exercising with that arm/shoulder and although it

Fit

is far from ‘fighting fit’ yet, I can feel real progress and have still been working away at those-parts-I-can’t- always-reach in the meantime so have not ‘lost’ two months. I know none of that would have happened without Claire because, on my own, I simply would not have had either the motivation or discipline to carry on exercising and, most importantly, neither the confidence nor knowledge to safely ‘work’ my injury. And never in my wildest dreams did I imagine how attached I could become to a set of dumbbells! Bright pink and weighing just 1 kg each, they have proved invaluable in returning strength to my arm/shoul- der without stress and strain. Just wish I could say the same about the resistance bands! They take delight in curling themselves into ever-tightening boa constrictors, no matter how much I smooth them out or lie them flat. My ever-patient, kindly obliging Claire usually puts

them on for me as lower legs and ankles are amongst those-parts- I-can’t-always-reach – I have absolutely no chance of lassoing my feet, especially not when standing up – but even she cannot understand quite why they ‘attack’ me every time. At least the Pilates ring behaves itself…

Amanda’s personal trainer Claire Boyt O

ver the last two months the weather has

gradually improved and we have been lucky to be able to train outside for almost all of our sessions. Getting some fresh air along with a shot of natural vitamin D has been a bonus and an added motivation during the past few weeks. Amanda has stayed positive despite her injury and stayed on track by continuing to attend her weekly sessions. I have been crea- tive in my planning and adapted exercises to support and guide her during this time and gradually she is seeing an improvement. Amanda has a fabulous sense of humour and is always able to look at the funny side of

things which has helped her to stay positive and on track. If you have suffered an injury or setback try to stay positive like Amanda and take advice from your doctor or healthcare professional to find movements that can support your recovery. Although these setbacks can sometimes make

you feel like giving up try not to let them get you down. Life sometimes gets in the way and it’s easy to make excuses not to train however, by making exercise a normal part of your routine you can make huge improvements to your health and live a long and active life. If you would like to find out how I can help you on your own journey to fitness contact me directly on the details provided.
