OUR ROTHERHAM BRANCH

Highways England developed smart motorways to manage traffic in a way that minimises environmental impact, cost and construction time by avoiding the need to build additional lanes.

They were first introduced in 2006 and more than 472 extra lane miles have already been added to the road network.

Data gathered has found that journey reliability has improved by 22 percent, while personal injury accidents have fallen by more than half thanks to better communication with drivers.

The red ‘X’

If you notice this, you should move out of a lane to avoid a fine of up to £100. The lane may be closed for a number of reasons such as debris, a person or animal in the road, an accident or broken down car ahead. It may even be cleared for emergency services access.

Variable speed limits

If no speed is displayed, the national speed limit applies but if there is an alternative speed displayed, this must be adhered to. If you are caught speeding, you will be liable for a fine, which can range from £100 and three penalty points up to £2,500 for major offences.

Motorways Smarter

While the concept of smart motorways aims to deliver a positive impact, it’s important to be aware of the rules of the road.

Emergency lay-bys Emergency refuge areas are

located on smart motorways only for those who have broken down or been involved in an accident. They are positioned up to every 1.5 miles apart, with an e mergency telephone available to request assistance.

These are marked with large blue signs featuring an orange SOS telephone symbol. Arrows will direct you into an indicated area marked on the tarmac and painted orange, where you should stop and switch on your hazard warning lights. Occupants should then exit the vehicle from the passenger side and stand behind the crash barrier.

The use of the hard shoulder You should only use the hard shoulder as an extra lane when it is clearly signed as open to use. The hard shoulder is there to provide extra road space at peak times and is an additional motorway lane when active. If there is no signal active over the hard shoulder then this means it is not open to traffic. Using the hard shoulder when it is not open means you are taking a risk and could cause a collision. With the nation’s roads becoming ever more congested, only time will tell if smart motorways can manage the increased load. But it seems that, for the near future at least, they are here to stay and will continue to be the means by which the authorities regulate traffic flow.
