With Dawn Topliss of Craft Corner,
29 High Street, Rotherham MAKE YOUR OWN:
GORDON THE
GARDEN GNOME
YOU WILL NEED: • Air Drying Clay • Palette Knife • Small Rolling Pin • Garlic Press • Acrylic Paint (Red, Blue, White and Skin) • Mod Podge or Varnish • Cutting knife • Paint Brush and Water
METHOD
Use your air drying clay to roll a ball approximately 5cm diameter for the body, a smaller ball for the head, two long sausage shapes for the legs and two thinner ones for the arms. Take both legs and bend one end upwards and shape into a point for shoe. Lay one leg over the other to cross in the middle. Now slightly flatten the bottom ends and, using a small amount of water, sit the body on top. Use your pallete knife to smooth where the legs join the body at the back. Position the arms and rest the hands on the legs. Again smooth any joints.
Now join the head onto the
body, roll a small ball for the nose and position on the head. Roll out a large rectangle of
clay, measure the height from base to under the arms and cut accordingly.
Place under the arm at one side and round the back to under the other arm. This forms the Gnome’s coat; let it drape at the bottom and cut into a circular shape this will enable your Gnome to sit nicely. Smooth any joins under the arms and at the back with your knife and water.
Make a small teardrop shape for an ear and place on one side of the head.
Use a garlic press to make the beard. Start at the ear and work your way around under his nose and up the other side. Shape a hat by rolling a fat sausage shape and applying pressure at one end to taper to a point. Use your thumb and forefingers to thin out the brim. Place on top of the head shaping over his ear and resting on the nose. Bend over the top point.
Set Gordon aside to dry overnight or depending on conditions it could take longer. Once dry paint with acrylic paints, leave to dry again then seal with Mod Podge or Varnish. Gordon the Gnome is now ready to go in your garden.
Happy Crafting!
