tradition
At the heart of the town centre for over 760 years, Barnsley Markets has been serving the people of South Yorkshire for generations.
The variety on offer reflects the diversity of customers and demonstrates how the Market has developed over the years to keep apace with changing tastes and needs.
In November 2018, a new look Barnsley Markets re-opened following an extensive refurbishment programme, the first major milestone as part of a multi-million-pound redevelopment of the town centre. It reflects a town centre of the future, with a complementary mix of retail and leisure along with a strong and unique independent offer. There are now over 100 stalls spanning two floors, offering everything from fresh fruit and veg to quality meat. Alongside a deli butcher, you will find a fabulous cheese shop and a range of fishmongers. Fresh fish, locally made cheese and a Barnsley chop - what could be better? Quality local produce has always been integral to the popularity of the Market and traders still arrive from dawn each day with the freshest of goods.

perfume, household textiles, flowers, cards, books and sweets. There’s even a stall selling Barnsley’s very own brand of tea Barnsley Brew who’ve searched t’ globe to bring tha a reet grand cup o tea.
Barnsley Market is bustling with trade. Scores of shoppers visit week after week, day after day, supporting the local businesses and colourful traders that call the market home. The outdoor market brings together an assortment of different stalls throughout the week, adding a real eclectic mix to the retail offer of the town centre.
Just a month after the re-launch footfall in the market was up 10 per cent on the previous year, with over a staggering 260,000 people spending their money locally. Some traders – including one who has been on the market for 32 years – recorded record sales.
Barnsley Market is bright and busy, it’s vibrant with all the character you’d expect from a market in a modern setting. This is a market that welcomes everyone – with a huge range of products on offer.
Have a wander around, enjoy the vibrancy of a traditional market, then recharge your batteries and soak up the atmosphere at one of the cafes or coffee shops.
Opening on 28 September, Market Kitchen will be an exciting new addition – an independent food court that will offer street food alongside the three established traditional market cafes. Together with those traditional cafes – each of which has a loyal customer base who regularly visit for a breakfast and a cuppa – Market Kitchen will cater for everyone.
As an alternative to the big name fast food outlets, Market Kitchen will offer independent outlets serving tasty diverse food.
In a time when shopping habits are changing, markets are a crucial part of our cultural heritage that we should all strive to uphold. Barnsley Market is a hub of social interaction, bringing people together to support the local independent retail sector.
At Barnsley Markets you’ll find a warm welcome from traders and experience a truly unique shopping experience. It’s a place where you will find all your old favourites and much more.
