Breed to Breathe
The squishy face, the short and cuddly body, the big adoring eyes – these are some of the many features that attract people to breeds such as pugs and bulldogs, Netherland Dwarf rabbits or Persian and Burmese cats.
Though love is often blind to the severe health issues that compromise these animals’ wellbeing and force them to suffer because of their appearance. Wickersley-based animal charity Rain Rescue wants to raise awareness about the health problems brachycephalic breeds, or flat faced pets as they are more commonly known, are dealing with due to poor breeding.
The rescue which takes in over 400 dogs and cats every year is
‘‘last year 93 percent of vets treated flat faced dogs for breathing problems’’
seeing a rise in the number of these types of animals entering their care and wants the public to be aware of what it means to own one of these breeds.
Brachycephalic actually means ‘short face’ and relates to all animals with short snouts and the ‘squished face’ look.
These breeds can suffer from a condition called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which is a combination of upper airway abnormalities seen in animals that have been selectively bred.
Lauren Sanderson, Deputy Charity Manager of Rain Rescue, said: “It’s often considered normal for these breeds to snore and snort but it isn’t, this is the effect of breeders choosing looks over health.”
The British Veterinary Association states that last year 93 percent of vets treated flat faced dogs for breathing problems, demonstrating the extent of the problem within the UK.
Many prospective pet owners do not realise that a high percentage of flat-faced pets cannot live a happy and healthy quality of life without veterinary intervention, and it is an unfortunate fact that owners of these breeds are likely to need to dedicate more time and effort to caring for their health needs than most other breeds. Veterinary treatment for these health issues is expensive, so its important for pet owners to factor in the cost of caring for a pet throughout their lifetime when you make the decision to add one to your family.
