Celebrating Yorkshire
Here in Yorkshire, we’re a particularly proud bunch. As the home of glorious rolling countryside, stunning castles, outstanding natural scenery and good proper grub we have plenty to smile about here in God’s own county.
Yorkshire Day is a memorable date to celebrate everything we love about our county and show the world how proud we are to be Yorkshire. Commemorated every year on 1st August, Yorkshire Day serves as an honourary celebration of our county’s rich history. It gives us Yorkshire folk a chance to reflect on our heritage, and it’s a great opportunity to increase tourism and investment in Britain’s largest county.
Yorkshire Day was first celebrated in 1975 by
the Yorkshire Ridings Society, beginning as part of a protest movement against local government reforms in 1974 which abolished Yorkshire’s three traditional ‘Ridings’ and saw parts of our historic county transferred to Humberside and Lancashire.
Why August 1st?
It was the date of the Battle of Minden, a decisive battle that took place during the Seven Years’ War in 1759 where a number of Yorkshire soldiers fought. Minden Day was already celebrated by some Yorkshire regiments, who wear white roses in their headdresses. It’s also said to mark the day of the emancipation of slaves in the UK, which occurred in 1834 and was largely credited to Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce.

So, don your flat cap, walk the damp countryside with your whippet, eat a Yorkshire pudding with gravy, then settle down to complain about the rising price of a pint of best bitter, before ending the night on a cheerier note by remembering the good old days.
