At 115 feet, Keppel’s Column is the tallest of the Wentworth follies; it was originally planned to be even taller and capped with a statue of Admiral Keppel, but evidently the Marquis of Rockingham ran short of funds. It was designed by John Carr, who was also responsible for the Wentworth Woodhouse stables. Built between 1773 and 1781, Its site originally marked the southern border of the Wentworth Woodhouse estate. The grade 11 listed column was publicly accessible well into the 20th century, but was boarded up in the 1960s and can now only its exterior can be admired.
