BARNSLEY TOWN

Times change, service remains

For over 170 years, 17-19 Regent Street has been a hub of legal affairs.

In 1845, two former terraced

properties became home to Tyas & Harrison Solicitors. John Tyas was born in 1817 and went on to become a solicitor and partner in Tyas and Harrison from around 1845.

In 1881, John, his wife Sarah

and three children were living at Upper Wood Hall in Darfield where they had nine servants living in. John was twice Mayor of Barnsley, serving between 1870–1872, and 1883–1884. His eldest son Charles resulted

in the formation of Tyas and Son and the name continued until the merger with Elmhirst & Maxton in 1981 and Parker March in 2009, resulting in Elmhirst Parker Solictors today. Since the 19th century, there

is a clear line of development – of partners passing on traditions, culture and expertise – from one generation to another.

partner in the firm and shared with us fond memories of working on Regent Street over the past four decades, starting as an office junior earning £6 a week in March 1973, aged just 16. “In those early days, a

typewriter was used to create documents on parchment paper. One mistake and it was necessary to start from scratch, a distant cry from today’s rapid email communication. Documents were often 16 or 17 pages long, so it was an arduous task.”

first email in 1995, waiting with bated breath for a response which came almost immediately from London. We were astounded.” Whilst the days of typewriters

and ink pens are a thing of the past, the practice of taking oaths remains unchanged. A bible, inscribed with the handwriting of Geo Harrison, dating back to 1862, has stood the test of time and is still in use today. If you are looking for good

old fashioned professional service that has stood the test of time, you are in safe hands at Elmhirst Parker.
