We all know how important it is to protect our skin from the harmful effects of feel good sunshine.
However, did you know your hair gets sun burned too and is in need of just the same protection?
Because we have no nerve endings in our hair, we often can’t tell the damage that’s been done, the only clue is if we happen to sunburn our scalp. Strong sun exposure on our hair can cause it to become dry and brittle, it can damage the outer cuticle layer and increase tangles and splits, making the hair less manageable. UV light is also very good at fading darker, richer hair colours, while making blonde hair look over bright and brassy.
The best form of protection is to try and keep
luscious locks
your head covered up; sun hats, light scarves or even shady parasols are an ideal way to protect hair, scalp and skin.
Often though it’s not enough, so there are products that you can apply to your hair to protect and moisturise throughout the day. My favourite product is Redken’s One United (available in salons £16.50). This miracle leave-in treatment has over 20 different benefits in one bottle, including heat protection, hydration, vitamin nourishment and gentle detangling. Apply after shampooing to keep your hair healthy all day long.
L’Oréal Série Solar Sublime UV Filter Spray, (Salons £15.50) contains UV protection and aloe vera for added condition. Lee Stafford Colour Fade Protection Oil (High St £7.95) contains Unbuntu oils from Africa and provides UV protection in wet or dry hair. Mark Hill Moisturising UV Protection Spray (Boots £3.95) is a leave in protection spray that is easy to use throughout the day.
If you’re in and out of the water it’s worth considering that you’ll need to re-apply afterwards, as unlike the skin sunscreens, very few hair products are waterproof.
Just like after sun on your skin, treat your hair to some after sun care too. Anti-colour fade shampoos provide anti-antioxidants to cut down those pesky free radicals that have built up in the sun.
Moisturising shampoos containing Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil or Argan Oil are all good at replenishing moisture back into the hair. Always finish with a light conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends, this will help to de- tangle and seal your hair. Leave-in products such as Redken’s One United will really help. We always recommend to shampoo gently, never towel rub and gently comb through with a detangling brush.
So, enjoy the sunshine and remember to take care of your skin, and hair, during all the summer fun.
