ALL THE LATEST NEWS, VIEWS AND STORIES FROM AROUND YOUR LOCAL AREA:MAY/JUNE PERCY HOUSE GALLERY 38-42 Market Place, Cockermouth

After the Storm by Jim Binns

Whitehaven Harbour by Jim Binns

The exhibition to be shown at Percy House Gallery, Cockermouth throughout May, is being held to celebrate the life and work of Cockermouth water-colourist Jim Binns, who sadly died suddenly in June 2018.

Jim and his family decided in 1988 to leave the industrial North-East, where he had worked as a maintenance engineering with ICI, Billingham and endeavour to establish himself as a water-colourist of the inspirational landscape of the Lake District.

In 2001, Jim held a successful ‘One-Man Exhibition’ at the newly- established Theatre By The Lake in Keswick. He was also exhibited at the renowned Lake Artists Society Summer Exhibition held yearly in Grasmere. Jim was one of the original artists showing his works at Percy House Gallery and Jim's family are extremely grateful to them for this ‘Retrospection’ display of his work. Written around 1999, this is Jim’s description of his

RETROSPECTION - a celebration of the life of Cockermouth artist Jim Binns paintings in his own words:

“My preferred painting method involves allowing initial, almost random, washes to bring out the memory of past walks in the landscape as the painting develops.

“I also like to paint by responding directly to the subject in the ‘impressionist’ manner.”

Jim’s artistic talent also extended to being a keen jazz musician and he played for many years with Stan Foster from Lorton at local venues, including a Panto at the Sands Centre starring Jason Donovan.

Ann and Jim celebrated their Golden Wedding in January 2018, just six months before Jim’s sudden death in June 2018 and it is Ann’s wish that people go along to Percy House Gallery throughout May and enjoy seeing a selection of his paintings to celebrate his art.

The exhibition runs until Saturday 1st June. www.percyhouse.co.uk • 01900 829 667
