Nearly 1 million self-assessment taxpayers missed the 31st January deadline this year. Normally, they would all have received penalty notices in February but not this year. HMRC have admitted that they have not been sent out, because they have re-assigned too many staff to firefighting a possible No Deal Brexit. So, that’s £100m or so in penalties not collected on time.

The possibility of ‘No Deal’ has left a lot of areas of our public services in a total mess. Locally, sheep farmers face the biggest risk. In the words of Minette Batters, President of the NFU, “4 and a half million lambs will be left without a market” due to the high tariffs looming. DEFRA have not denied that they have plans for a mass ‘foot and

mouth’ style slaughter, nor have they confirmed this.

A client called in February to say: “Chris, we have a €50,000 bid to submit to Germany in March, to begin in May. Do we price in No Deal risk and possibly lose the bid? Or should we leave it out and then lose money on the project if No Deal goes through?” This sort of question is more or less impossible to answer.

Personally, I think a No Deal Brexit would be the second ‘stupidest’ thing this country has done in the last 50 years, after the Iraq war. However, it would still be better than

doing nothing at all, because at least then, businesses would know where they stood. Overall, it is preferable to know that you are standing in dog poo than to wonder if you are standing in it because once you know you are in dog poo, you can start cleaning up the mess.

My advice to all clients who import or export, is do not assume business as usual, even if the other party is outside the EU. It’s crystal clear for example, that this country’s relationship with Japan has been damaged by Brexit. Ask the questions, even if you don’t like the answers. At least if you know you are in a mess, you can start to clean it up!
