It has been raining all day. Katy and Daniel have had to stay indoors all day. Luckily, their Uncle Ben has come to stay. He is their Mummy’s brother and is good fun.

Together, they have done a puzzle, played board games and made a model theatre with cut-out actors and given a short play they wrote themselves: all about a dragon and a princess. All this is fun but if only it would stop raining so that they can go outside to play.

It is bedtime just as the rain stops. Before Mummy can say, “Bedtime!” Uncle Ben says, “We will go outside for some fun.”

Katy, Daniel and Uncle Ben put on Wellington boots and go outside. They see who can make the biggest splashes in the puddles. Then they go to the pond on the village green. There are ducks by the pond shaking their wings to get rid of the rainwater. Uncle Ben gives Katy and Daniel some seed to feed the ducks. The ducks are very hungry and soon all the seed has gone.

 “Time to go home,” says Uncle Ben.

On the way home they splash in puddles again. Daniel jumps in a deep puddle with both feet and makes a very big splash.

When they get home Mummy says, “Just AND NOW FOR SOMETHING TO DO... Make a Mobile For this you will only need...

• One coathanger • Cotton or thread • Cardboard • Crayons

• Scissors On the cardboard draw some shapes. They could be the outline of an animal, or a star, or just shapes like a circle and a triangle. Anything you like. Colour them in with different colours and cut the shapes out.

Make a hole in the top of each shape so that they balance nicely when you tie the cotton or thread to them. Tie the other ends of the cotton or thread to the coathanger, so that the coathanger is balanced when you hang it up. Hang you coathanger up and watch the shapes on the threads gently move around in any slight breath of air.

If you want to make a more difficult mobile try using sticks (the sort used to tie up plants in indoor plant pots are good) instead of the coathanger. Then tie other sticks to the main stick and tie your shapes to them. You must get the balance just right. Hang it up carefully, blow on it gently and watch it move.

Hint. If possible use a silk thread or single strand colon thread. They will turn more easily and not twist.

Have fun! Katy and Daniel’s Wet Day A SHORT STORY FOR YOUNG CHILDREN BY CHRIS BOWER©2019

look how wet you all are!”

“Yes,” says Uncle Ben, “but just look how happy we all are!”

Katy, Daniel and Uncle Ben do look happy, with glowing cheeks and big smiles.

“You are right,” says Mummy. “Smiles are more important than wet clothes, which will soon dry. Now Katy and Daniel, hot baths and a warm drink for each of you and then bed.”

Soon they are tucked up in bed and Uncle Ben reads them a story.

Then Daniel says, with a yawn, “That was a great walk. I really enjoyed….” But Uncle Ben never does hear what Daniel really enjoyed because they have both fallen happily asleep.
