Turnerwood, Chesterfield Canal

Rotherham Ramble

A Rural With Rotherham Metro Ramblers

This circular 10-mile route (which can be split into two linear 5 mile sections) is part of the Rotherham Ring Route boundary walk and takes in the picturesque villages of Harthill, Turnerwood and Lindrick Common close towards the Worksop border.

START: The Beehive Public House, Harthill S26 7YH

PARKING: Parking is avaialble free of charge in the Harthill Village Car Park on Woodall Lane S26 7YQ

Leave the Beehive and turn right, passing All Hallows Church which has arcades in the nave dating back to around 1200AD. Head along Union St until you reach a footpath after the shop on the left.

Cross Serlby Lane to enter a field via a stile. Carry on through fields for about 1km until you reach a junction just before Loscar Common Plantation (the second small wood). Turn diagonally right and head on until you reach Common Rd. Turn left along the road for approx. 30m then head right over a stile into a field.

Head diagonally through three fields to

Packman Lane. This is a remnant of Ricknield St, a Roman road that connected Templeborough to York and Derby.

Cross the lane and keep straight on towards

a hedge. Pass on its right-hand side and continue straight on in the same direction, crossing a farm track (with farm buildings to right-hand side) and a further large field to a footpath sign on Southards Lane.

Cross the lane and continue to a kissing gate.

Pass Moor Mill, continuing straight on through kissing gates. Drop down a banking ahead, crossing a stile, steps and plank footbridge, followed by more steps until you reach a ladder stile to access Common Rd opposite Top Hall. Turn right for 80m to the junction then take the left footpath. Head diagonally across a field then follow the edge of Netherthorpe Airfield, exiting at Top Farm. Turn left, following the bend in the lane, then turn left again at the junction before turning right into Little Lane. Follow the lane for about 200m to a footpath sign where the road bends to the left. Keep straight on across fields towards Turnerwood.

‘‘Turnerwood was once busy with traffic from nearby limestone quarries, the stone of which was used to rebuild the Houses of Parliament’’

At the pretty hamlet of Turnerwood, pass over the canal bridge where you will find a café and ice cream kiosk for refreshments. Built around an old mooring basin on the Chesterfield Canal, Turnerwood was once busy with traffic from nearby limestone quarries, the stone of which was used to rebuild the Houses of Parliament. After a short pitstop, continue ahead to the

railway. Take great care to cross the railway and then turn right to follow the canal feeder to Brancliffe Grange Farm on your right. At the end, turn left to follow a rising track into woodland then downhill to cross over the River Ryton.

Continue in the same direction, following marker posts over the golf course to reach the access lane at its junction with Lindrick Rd which marks the half-way point. For the return to Harthill, turn left at the junction of Lindrick Rd and walk along the tarmac lane between the golf course and houses, ignoring all left turns. Look out for interesting garden ornaments including rocket missile and aircraft at ‘Nirvana’. At the end of the houses where the path narrows and tarmac ends, continue straight on through a gate and cross straight over a wider track. Continue through denser woodland to reach the A57 and cross with great care. Turn left down a no-through road into Lindrick Dale.

At the end of Lindrick Dale, turn right along a track, continuing under a railway bridge, where it bends to the left.

Approx. 250m later, turn right at a public footpath sign and cross the field towards the railway track. Cross with care and reach the Chesterfield Canal.

Cross over the canal at a bridge and turn right at the first junction, following a track with the canal to your right. After the track bends to the left, watch out for a path to the right opposite a sign for ‘Old Spring Wood’. Follow this path into woods and join another track before turning right, passing a water treatment plant. After 20m follow the footpath uphill until it meets Back Lane. Turn right to walk through Thorpe Salvin. At the junction keep straight along Harthill Rd with the church to your right.

Continue until you reach a footpath sign, then turn left, crossing diagonally through the field towards Loscar Wood. Turn right along a path at the edge of the wood, then left at the end to walk parallel to Packman Lane. Cross Packman Lane and take the stile opposite, following the field path with hedges to your right, then through woodland to meet outward path.

Retrace steps back to Harthill.
