Celebrating words and pictures


They say a picture paints a thousand words and Jane Austen declared there was no enjoyment like reading.


Based on these universal truths, two events at Swinton Library this spring look set to attract photography fans and book lovers alike.


A photographic exhibition, entitled Used Bookshops, has been designed to bring books to life by giving a flavour of the unique experience of visiting a used bookshop.


In both words and pictures, photographer John Pyatt offers a vivid description of a curious visitor venturing into the world of old books, evoking images of overflowing shelves and dusty volumes stacked to the rafters. Based on a sample of the 400 bookshops that John visited unannounced, the resulting photographs were taken over a three-year period and represent a record of each shop and the person working there at the time. Clearly passionate about his subject, John explains: “When you find your treasure, it is such a gloriously fun moment, the feel, the smell and the perfect sense of handling something of the past, that will take you to the future. “In truth you could have found it at home with a couple of clicks, and had it delivered to your door. But it’s not the same, it’s just too easy and not at all fun. A book


found with its price pencilled inside the front page is so much more satisfying.”


The exhibition runs from March 12th to May 3rd.


Another treat for


photography enthusiasts comes on World Book Night on Tuesday 23rd April, when the Royal Photographic Society, Yorkshire Region will be hosting the Festival of the Photo Book.


The branch is inviting people to share their photo books to go on display at Swinton Library where Society members will be on duty throughout the event to ensure the books are treated with care. The event is open to all and submissions can come from members of the public as well as Society members. Photo books can be produced with or without text and can be on any subject but it is hoped that they will tell a story.


The festival will include the Photo Book display, John’s bookshop exhibition and a resource table for making handmade books along with the opportunity to network with others and discuss techniques.
