Protect your pet from garden nasties
Dogs love nothing more than running around in the open air and what safer place than their own back garden?
But, with a nose for exploring every nook and cranny, our four-legged friends have a habit of running into trouble and the garden could become a hazardous place. Top of the doggy danger list is fruit as the stones found in apricots, cherries, plums and peaches contain deadly cyanide.

These are especially dangerous if they’re crushed and consumed but they can also be a choking hazard. The leaves and stems of some fruits may be poisonous too. When it comes to some of our most common flowers and vegetables, the risks include tomato leaves, unripe or raw
potatoes, azaleas and lilies which are all highly poisonous to dogs. They can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and might even be fatal so pick other varieties to grow instead.
Compost heaps are environmentally-friendly but might not be good news for dogs if they’re not in a purpose-made container. With a reputation for eating anything they can lay their paws on, dogs might be tempted to forage for a snack in any old heap. But compost can produce dangerous mycotoxins so it’s wise to use a proper bin or barriers to keep inquisitive noses out. Planning ahead is also advised when using weed killers as many of them contain potentially dangerous glyphosate. It’s vital to shut your dog inside when you use one and the same goes for fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides too.
The best advice for keeping canine companions safe and happy in spring is to be pro-active and protect them from these seasonal dangers.
