Bowel Screening It may be a difficult subject to talk about but knowing your own habits and participating in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme are both crucial to an early diagnosis.
Bowel Cancer and
April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and a timely reminder not to leave your health to chance. The Be Cancer SAFE team are advising all of us to “look down the loo when we have a poo”. Checking the contents of your lavatory bowl is a small price to pay for improving your chances of staying healthy.
Most people diagnosed with bowel cancer are over the age of 60 but it can affect younger people, so it’s important to know your bowel habits and to recognise when something is different for you. If bowel cancer is found at an early stage, it’s easier to treat and there’s a better chance of survival.
Symptoms can include: • Having blood in your faeces without there being a clear reason for it
• A change in the times and how often you go to the toilet • Having tummy pain, bloating or feeling uncomfortable after you eat • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
Most people with these
symptoms don’t have bowel cancer but if you experience one or more of them, or if things just don’t feel right, do see your GP. Don’t be embarrassed and don’t ignore your symptoms, Doctors are used to this type of conversation.
Bowel Cancer Screening could save your life as it can find tiny amounts of blood which can’t normally be seen. People aged between 60 and 74 will receive a screening kit in the post every two years and can complete the test in their own homes.
If you’re aged 75 or over, you can request the kit by calling the Freephone helpline on 0800 7076060 where you can also get more details about the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. Bowel Cancer UK also provides useful information, just visit
www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk or telephone 020 7940 1760.
