HOMESTYLE Tidy home, tidy mind

When the weather starts to warm up, it’s a sign to burst open your windows and, perhaps less exciting, explore the contents of your cleaning cupboard.

Spring is the perfect time to do a good deep clean in your home, allowing you to be ready to face warmer days with a house that sparkles. Yes, it’s already that time of year again. Don’t know where to start your spring cleaning project? Follow our handy hints, to include all the spots you’ve likely neglected for the past year and tackle them like a pro.

Preparation is key to success With a little preparation, you’ll be spic-and-span before you know it.

Start with stocking up on the right supplies. Basic checklist: an all-purpose cleaner, disinfecting wipes, rubber gloves, glass cleaner for showers and windows, carpet spot cleaner, microfiber cloths, a sponge, and a small duster. Keep all of your essential supplies together in a

holder, so it’s easy to carry them around with you to any room in the house.

One step at a time Tackling one room at a time will help keep you focused. Maybe you begin with the bedroom, spend an afternoon there, then the next morning

take on the living room or kitchen. Space things out as, after all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, right?

Clean those forgotten spaces Tackle those pesky spots that can be overlooked on a regular basis. Consider the tracks of your windows or behind the toilets, using everyday items like an old toothbrush and some vinegar.

Use the nozzle attachment of your hoover to get right under your couch cushions and suck up everything hiding there. And when you’re dusting, don’t just dust around things—remove all of the items so you can clean the actual surface of the shelf.

Extra points for disinfecting your remotes and remembering to clean your toothbrush holder - places in the home where bacteria can spread very easily.

Address your fridge

Even if you’re pretty diligent about throwing away expired food or drinks, there are bound to be condiments lurking in your fridge. Take the shelves completely out and wash

them down. Once everything is ready to go back in, organise the contents: The door - the least cold area - should hold condiments; the bottom drawers - with higher humidity - should hold the veggies and fruits; and the middle shelf - the coldest - is best for perishable items.

A social phenomenon

Cleaning has become one of the biggest social media trends of our time, with hashtags such as #cleaningobsessed a big hit on Instagram. There are a wealth of avid cleaning gurus glamorising typically mundane tasks. And as they continue to post cleaning demonstrations using their favourite cleaning products and tools, retailers have noticed a dramatic increase in our purchases.

There’s no excuse not to spring into action!
