Celebrating the contribution of women as part of the proud heritage of Wentworth and Elsecar is the focus of a creative new textile-arts project that is bringing history to life.
Drawing on personal stories and memories, textile artist Gemma Nemer is creating a lasting legacy to honour the grit and determination of the strong women who through the ages rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to support their families and wider community.
Gemma is encouraging local people to help produce a unique piece of artwork, in the shape of three giant textile installations, by sharing their stories about the female role models who shaped these notable South Yorkshire neighbourhoods.
Launching in early March to coincide with International Women’s Day, Gemma’s project, ‘Common Threads – the Fabric of Society’, involves a series of free workshops which give people the opportunity to contribute through embroidery, hand-stitching or machine work.
And, if crafts aren’t your strong point, you can simply drop in to a workshop to share your stories and photographs, providing further inspiration for the ambitious venture. For those who take part, there’s a chance your work will be showcased when the finished textiles take pride of place in the Pillared Hall at Wentworth Woodhouse as well as being displayed in Wentworth and Elsecar villages later this summer. Gemma, who is currently Artist in
Residence at Elsecar Heritage Centre, said her project celebrates the achievements and endeavours of the women from both villages, past and present. “Women have played such a big role in our local history but unfortunately some of their stories seem to have been forgotten over the years.
“When we think about the industries such as mining and iron, we often hear about the men who worked down the pits or in the forges but there are also untold stories about the women who played important roles, too,” she said.
While bookings are not essential, you can book your place on a workshop or find out more about how you can get involved in the Common Threads project by emailing Gemma on
gemma.nemer@
hotmail.co.uk or just turn up on the day.
