OUT & ABOUT

A new life begins for Wentworth Woodhouse

Etched firmly into the heart of the South Yorkshire landscape, the majestic façade of Wentworth Woodhouse has long captivated visitors from near and far, all eager to find out what lies inside the grandest of stately homes. From April, visitors will have the chance to explore this great house like never before, with new tours, talks and guided walks.

As the house’s 83 acres of grounds and

gardens are catapulted back to life with the colourful emergence of crocuses, daffodils and bluebells, springtime also heralds the end of darker days inside the imposing entrance too, as this sleeping giant takes its first steps towards becoming an exciting, accessible visitor attraction. As spring arrives, it sees a resurgence in the

popular garden tours which uncover some of the grounds’ highlights including the mighty Punch Bowl, Ionic Temple and Camellia House all intertwined between azaleas and rhododendrons. And from April, you will be able to discover

even more fascinating elements thanks to a collaboration with the nearby Wentworth Garden Centre. A new gateway will be opened through to the historic walled garden at the Hague Lane site, where visitors can discover its mesmerising maze, Italianate designs and bear pit which once became separated from the main grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse. For those looking to explore this palace of

beauty and art a little further, from April, new day packages will give visitors the chance to spend a full day at Wentworth Woodhouse and enjoy

everything the house has to offer both indoors and out. The two popular house tours, The Wentworth

and The Clifford, will soon be joined by new specialist tours. From April, discover the house’s hidden tales on a specialist tour with experts including their conservation team, as well as the house’s longest-serving staff member, who can tell stories of working for the Fitzwilliam family nearly half a century ago. Head gardener Scott will also lead special tours around the historic garden. Previously a private garden, Scott has looked after this special place for 15 years and now has the great pleasure of sharing his work with new visitors. Before you leave, be sure to visit the new and

extended shop to pick up unique gifts, historical books or a taste of Wentworth to take home. Stop off for a locally-roasted coffee in the newly- decorated tearoom or relax by the fireplace on the cosy Chesterfield sofa with soup or a sandwich by the large original windows overlooking the vast front lawn. There will even be a dedicated dog-friendly

area soon, where muddy paws will be overlooked if good manners are observed – whether visitors

have two legs or four. The new guided tours and walks mark a major

step forward by the new owners, the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, who are currently making headway with their ambitious masterplan to transform the visitor experience at Wentworth Woodhouse and preserve its long-term future. The masterplan, which was launched late last

year, will see the 18th century house and stable block evolve from its crumbling days of old into a flourishing site that boasts commercial units for small businesses, holiday lets, increased events space and improved catering facilities. The finished result may be another decade or

so away but that doesn’t mean you can’t still be part of the action. While the property is undergoing a capital

works and repairs programme, rooftop tours will be available later this year to take visitors to a whole new level and experience Wentworth Woodhouse and its surrounding areas from an entirely new perspective. And with the local community’s continued

support, the Trust is here to ensure the house lives for centuries to come.
