Smiles & laughter

At The Porterbrook

Enjoying life might mean different things to different people but most would agree that spending time on new experiences, much-loved pastimes and trips down memory lane can play a big part in lifting our spirits and boosting our wellbeing.

And, for residents of The Porterbrook Care Home in Sheffield, that certainly rings true as there’s no shortage of creative activities and entertainment to fill the days with smiles, laughter and happy memories.

Never stuck for good ideas, staff and residents regularly put their heads together to plan an ongoing activities programme that really does offer something for everyone whatever the season. From Shetland ponies and exotic animals to magicians and opera singers, there’s no knowing what or who might arrive at The Porterbrook to bring back memories of days gone by or to make brand new ones and provide a talking point. This spring sees the return of the popular gardening club where residents can get back to nature, enjoy the fresh air and keep active. Plans are made in plenty of time in readiness for the better weather and a trip to a well-stocked garden centre is a vital part of the preparations and a fun excursion to boot.

After stocking up on seeds, shrubs and other supplies, residents can try out their green- fingers and potter around The Porterbrook’s safe

and secure garden each week sometimes with the help of local

schoolchildren who are invited to lend a hand or learn the ropes. Nurturing the plants and trees has been so successful that edible results often find their way to the dinner table with home-grown apples and pears among the produce to end up on the menu.

When it comes to quirky ways to mark annual events, this Easter will see residents invited to “Pimp up your Zimmer” by decorating their walking frames or sticks with seasonal designs while Easter hats and bonnets can be spruced up for a traditional celebration.

Music therapy is another popular and stimulating activity at The Porterbrook which invites dementia charity Lost Chord to run sing-along sessions once a month to bring back memories of days gone by. The musical theme continues with local schoolchildren always keen to visit, sing songs, recite poetry and swap stories. Annual visits to the seaside to blow the cobwebs away and indulge in some good old- fashioned fun are a particular highlight of the social calendar when residents can look forward to ice-cream, fish and chips, the feel of sand and the exhilarating smell of sea air – a truly nostalgic day out that few things can beat. For a change of scene closer to home, there’s

always a warm welcome at the Friendship Luncheon Club where good food and entertainment are laid on at a local pub. Residents can also get involved with community life with a monthly visit to the local church to enjoy a light lunch and good company.

Social interaction across the generations and time spent in different environments are proven to have great benefits at any stage of life. They can reduce tension and anxiety, help improve cognitive function and be as beneficial as physical exercise. Offering such a full and varied events programme is all part of The Porterbrook’s commitment to provide exceptional care and nurture both the mental and physical health of residents with an emphasis on comfort and happiness.

Offering top-class residential, respite and dementia care, the dedicated team recognises that all residents are individuals but they thrive in company too so life at The Porterbrook really is the very best of both worlds.
