ME AND MY MENOPAUSE

By Dr Kieron Cooney COSMEDICA BEAUTY

The menopause is a time of change in a woman’s life caused by a gradual decline in ovarian function. French physician Charles de Gardanne first used the term menopause in 1812 and it’s derived from the Greek menos, meaning month, and pausos which means ending.

The Ryde clinic is run by a doctor and nurse partnership. Treatments include skin care, anti-ageing procedures, laser hair removal and minor surgical procedures.

Bespoke treatment plans include: • Microdermabrasion and Genuine Dermaroller • Anti-wrinkle injections and fillers • Silhouette thread facelift (authorised provider) • Bespoke high grade medical facials, including skin peels and cosmeceuticals • Agents for ZO, Obagi and Tebiskin skincare

Menopause is a gradual process, with peri-menopause leading to the complete cessation of periods. It is a natural female midlife event and often no medical treatment is needed.

The changes in hormone levels that occur include a reduction in oestrogen and progesterone, and these cause a broad range of menopausal symptoms: flushes, erratic periods, mood swings, vaginal dryness, bloating, headaches, memory issues, low mood, loss of libido, sleep disturbance, fatigue and low energy.

Conventional treatment of the menopause includes reassurance, lifestyle advice and the possible use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) when symptoms are severe and there are no medical contraindications.

Bio-Identical Hormones

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) takes the treatment of the menopause to a whole new level and is a welcome option for women wanting individually tailored treatment based on their unique hormone profile.

BHRT is now available at Cosmedica Clinic in Ryde from nurse specialist Vicky.

Individually prescribed bio-identical hormones can be the solution where conventional HRT has failed or caused side effects. BHRT is usually better tolerated than synthetic HRT and is prescribed and fine-tuned to the patient’s needs based on symptoms and blood hormone profile. BHRT is based on the principle that every woman is different with specific symptoms and hormone levels.
