I have danced all my life and taught many styles of fitness, but I was amazed when I first discovered Pilates. The moment I attended my first class I realised just how beneficial it was - both as a standalone programme and as part of a full fitness regime to improve general wellbeing.


Using control, concentration and core stabilising muscles as well as strengthening pelvic floor muscles, Pilates can greatly improve posture, physical and mental health. Pilates also improves co-ordination and flexibility and promotes increased muscular strength, endurance and tone.


I love the smooth flow of movement which relies on core and pelvic floor muscle engagement rather than using momentum. This is enhanced by the Pilates method of breathing.


Pilates focuses on all aspects of working the muscles using repetition, resistance and correct technique. This reduces risk of injury, lower back pain and stress levels.


Joseph Pilates was the pioneer of the Pilates movement. Having suffered from various health issues as a child, he developed techniques to improve his own physique. After working with wounded patients in the First World War and expanding his methods further, he opened his first studio working initially with elite athletes and dancers.


Since then Pilates has been adapted and developed to become accessible to everyone.


This low impact work-out can be invaluable to all levels of fitness regardless of ability, age and mobility. Give it a go!
