It is estimated that there are now 7.6 million family carers over the age of 16 in the UK, up by one million since 2005. This means 15 per cent of the country’s adults are now providing unpaid care. This is expected to rise by more than 60 per cent within 20 years.
On average family carers provide 19.5 hours per week of care, which is equivalent to 149 million hours of care being provided each week in the UK. That is equal to the work of 4 million full-time paid care-givers.
Carers are more likely to work less and earn less than those who do not have caring responsibilities. Carers overall earn 13 per cent less per hour than non-carers. Research also indicates that the issue could have a negative knock-on effect on gender equality in the workplace, as the majority of unpaid carers are women.
More women with professional and managerial jobs are trying to combine work with family care and carers are often driven to reduce their hours or leave work altogether without proper support.
The SMF report published in July makes a number of recommendations for the Social Care Green Paper, some of which are aimed at encouraging employers into offering more support for working carers.
Are you one of these unpaid carers? Do you need help or support navigating the complex process of arranging care or managing the finances of someone you care for? If you are in need of advice or signposting to agencies who can help call us for a free initial interview on 01983 527878.
