A level SOCIOLOGY Overview


Sociology attempts to understand and explain how societies and groups operate and change, how groups influence the individual, how meanings and interpretations “construct reality” and how social life is influenced by the unintended consequences of human action. Sociologists challenge the taken-for-granted ideas and beliefs that are generally accepted as being true or “common knowledge”. This process can undermine prejudice and misconceptions, develop insights into behaviour, and change (or reinforce) attitudes.

Course outline


Students investigate a variety of sociological perspectives including; Marxism, Feminism and Functionalism and how these perspectives apply to aspects of society.


Year 1: Students explore the role of education and family in society.


Year 2: Students investigate the key sociological perspectives in more detail and examining the patterns and reasons for criminal and deviant behaviour in society.


Complementary subjects Psychology, Philosophy, History, Politics, Health and Social Care, English Language and Media.
