A level ENGLISH LITERATURE Overview


English Literature develops students who have a love of reading across a range of genres and develops an ability to research and read around the texts and topics studied. An independent and exploratory approach to study is highly valued within the study of English Literature and is developed throughout the course.


The department is keen to visit the theatre whenever possible as well as travel to see poets and relevant speakers.

Course outline There are two exams at the end of two years of study.


Paper 1: Love through the Ages. This involves the study of at least three set texts including a Shakespeare play and a Pre-1900 and post-1900 novel. There is also an anthology of poetry.


Paper 2: Texts in shared contexts. This involves the study of Modern Times: Literature 1945 to present day. This will comprise the study of a prose text, a drama and an anthology of poetry.


Unseen texts will also be examined. 20% of the final marks are based upon a coursework essay comparing texts across time.


Complementary subjects English Language, History, Geography, Psychology, Drama, Dance, Music, Art, Philosophy and Sociology.
