A level CHEMISTRY


Overview Chemistry attempts to answer the question ‘what is the world made of’ and the search for this answer makes it a fascinating subject. From investigating how one substance can be drastically changed into another, to researching a new wonder drug which may save millions of lives, the opportunities that Chemistry provides are endless.

Course outline There are 3 main components: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.


Organic Chemistry: Alkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols, Organic analysis, Aldehyde and Ketones, Isomerism’s, aromatic chemistry and spectroscopy.


Inorganic Chemistry: Group 2 and Group 7, Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals and reactions of ions in aqueous solutions.


Physical Chemistry: Atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrode potentials and electrochemical cells.


There are 3 examinations at the end of the A level course. Your performance during practicals will also be assessed and if you demonstrate competency with these, you will receive a practical endorsement on your certificate. At least 15% of the marks for A level Chemistry are based on what you learned in your practicals.


Complementary subjects Maths, Biology, Physics and Geology.
