Name: John Hooper

Company: Universal Document Solutions Ltd

Job Title: Company chairman

Member Section

What does your company do? We provide digital hardware and software solutions to increase the productivity of a business’s documents and data.

How did it all start? After working for many years in the office print industry and having had a less than favourable experience with venture capitalists, the chance to do things in a better way came up and we grasped it.

What's your greatest achievement so far? Celebrating 52 years of a very happy marriage

What is the biggest risk you've ever taken — and did it work out? Starting a new and very successful business at an age when most people would be contemplating retirement.

What keeps you awake at night? Planning our next holiday – I am a sound sleeper.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? I would have started Unidoc Solutions 10 years earlier.

What has surprised you most in your job? The huge level of trust that we can deliver- placed in myself and Unidoc by large international PLCs.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Always listen to your customers, respect their wishes and provide objective and honest advice.

Which business do you most admire? Holland & Barrett, for providing what their customers want and for proving, by constantly offering more, that High Street retailing still has a future.

What exciting projects is your business working on? We’re working on new strategies to deliver some exciting new digital and connected technologies into businesses.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? I have always valued networking and the relationships that can result from it. Our membership of the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and particularly the 1813 group, has allowed us to take this to a higher level via the various events and the opportunity we have had to provide sponsorship of awards. Working with the Chamber and our client, Acorns, the chosen charity for 2018, is a particularly exciting prospect for us.
