Ramadan - a time to work and give
From around mid-May, you may have noticed some of your workers looking a bit more bleary-eyed than usual, perhaps yawning a bit more than usual and sneaking off now and then for a cat nap. The more astute may even
have noticed that they’ve stopped their daily intake of caffeine – or any other drink – and not a morsel of food has passed their lips during the day. The reason for this
behaviour will be that they’re Muslims who are observing the month of Ramadan by fasting from just before dawn to sunset. In the UK, that works out this year to more than 18 hours a day. It’s also a time that while
they will have given up many material things, most of them will be giving - or will have given and given quite considerably - to charity. For most Muslims decide to donate Zakat - obligatory giving of 2.5% of their wealth to the poor – and make other donations during Ramadan. The Charity Commission
estimated that in 2016, Muslims gave £100 million during Ramadan – that’s about £38 a second. By the time you read this, Ramadan may have ended and everyone will be back to their ‘normal’, cheery self. If it hasn’t, then just remember that not only are they continuing to work to their best without nourishment, but they’re also giving from their pockets to improve the lives of people in need.

A new £2m health centre extension has opened in West Heath, giving patients better and easier access to a wide range of cutting-edge NHS services. The development is helping
ensure NHS patients get the right treatment at the right time, without them having to make unnecessary trips to hospital. The extension is the latest addition to West Heath Surgery, a well-established and growing GP practice that serves over 7,000 patients in and around the West Heath area. The building was constructed by Nestings Group and funding for the new development came jointly from Barclays and NHS England’s Estates Technology Transformation Fund. With the new extension, West Heath Surgery is now 1500sq m in total. Audiology, Complex Wound
Care, Frailty, and Musculoskeletal Clinics are just some of the services available on site for patients. Thanks to the centre’s ‘virtual’
services, patients can also receive expert advice from GPs, Nurses, and Pharmacists from the comfort of their own homes. Particularly popular with patients
and clinical staff is the new Prescription Ordering Department (POD). The POD empowers patients to
manage their repeat prescriptions quickly and easily via the telephone or the surgery’s patient app, and to only order the items they require. The POD is currently a pilot service,

‘We are very excited about the many benefits that our centre can offer NHS patients and staff’
that has been extended and expanded following a successful initial phase. The centre is also the
headquarters for the SDS MyHealthcare GP Federation, which brings together 51 NHS GP practices across Birmingham with a combined patient list of around 300,000. Nirmal Vora, managing partner
at West Heath Surgery and CEO of SDS MyHealthcare, said: “We are very excited about the
many benefits that our centre can offer NHS patients and staff.
“Along with some fantastic new
facilities, we are championing new ways to use technology that help both our patients and the NHS itself. Our surgery has a proud history of innovation, and we’re already working on what we can next to improve the lives and health outcomes of our patients.” Mohammed Fiaz, from Barclays,
said: “Nirmal and his family have continued to develop the Medical Centre which now
provides a very comprehensive range of services to its patients.”
Recruitment firm is the right fit
A newly-established recruitment firm is hoping to shake-up marketing in the Midlands. Culture Recruitment, founded by Jamie Wills and Laurence Sidwell, started their recruitment business in October last year, after working for big corporate recruitment giants such as Michael Page and Hudson. They hope to approach marketing, sales and HR
recruitment by ‘offering something different’ to both employer and employee. As well as assessing candidates using traditional markers such as skills and experience, they are providing a ‘value-add’ assessment tool to highlight soft skills and cultural fit. The business also hopes to provide a service to
marketers and promote excellence in marketing in the Midlands, by partnering with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) in hosting a series of events. These will focus on some of the key issues that senior marketers face, from practical issues like big data and GDPR, digital and social media skills though to strategic issues around driving growth through innovation and getting ‘export ready’.
Laurence Sidwell (left), Maria Heckel and Jamie Wills Maria Heckel, of the CIM Regional Board, said: “We
are committed to sharing knowledge that will benefit the wider economy within the Midlands. That’s why we are delighted to team up with Culture Recruitment who share our belief that skilled marketers are at the heart of successful organisations.”
