A fresh taste for Sutton


Sutton Coldfield is alive after five with a flurry of new additions expanding the Royal Town’s entertainment and nightlife scene. Foodies are spoilt for choice following several openings in the Restaurant Quarter, with Mexican restaurant and bar, Bodega Cantina, Spanish tapas eatery, Sangria, and Craft Inn beer shop and bar among the latest additions to Birmingham Road.


‘Locals can choose from a wide variety of quality destinations’


The Bodega Cantina venue, which is larger than


the flagship Bitter’N’Twisted restaurant in Birmingham, features a 77 cover dining space with brightly decorated interiors and a large bar area. The newly-opened Craft Inn beer shop and bar offers a huge variety of hops in bottles, cans and growlers, as well as a 24-seater area for guests. In another addition to the district’s


entertainment and nightlife offering, Pizza Express has launched a weekly live music


evening taking place every Thursday. For those looking for a more active way to


spend their evenings, the new branch of The Gym is open 24 hours a day, with membership starting from as little as £10.99 a month and an energetic calendar of free classes. Mike Bushell, Sutton Coldfield Town Centre


BID manager, said: “In recent months we have welcomed some fantastic new venues to Sutton Coldfield’s already vibrant social scene, which is evident from achieving Purple Flag status over the past two years. “With such a diverse offering of destinations


on offer, locals can choose from a wide variety of quality destinations, whether it is a three- course meal, drinks with friends, or even an evening workout.” The new openings join the likes of Indian street


food seller, Bhaijaans, microbrewery Brewhouse & Kitchen, and retro gaming bar LVL:1. The Restaurant Quarter is an initiative


pioneered by the Sutton Coldfield Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) launched in June 2014 to help promote and establish Sutton as a dining destination.


Arthur Terry chief chairs summit


The CEO of Sutton Coldfield-based Arthur Terry Learning Partnership chaired a major conference bringing together school leaders from across the region. Richard Gill was chosen to chair #WMschooled – a conference organised by the Teaching Schools Council (TSC) and hosted by BBC Midlands Today presenter Mary Rhodes. Launched in 2015, and now the most


anticipated West Midlands school leaders event of the year, #WMschoolled attracts the cream of senior educational leaders and decision makers. This year’s conference focused on change and how senior school staff can find real solutions to


make positive differences in the classroom. Richard, who is the West Midlands


Representative of the TSC, said: “In 20 years’ time school leaders are going to look back at the legacy we have left behind. “A school led system, which seeks to see every


child attending a good or outstanding school, is giving us the opportunity to create inspirational futures for all of our young people whilst empowering the system to do what is right.” The conference took place at The Chateau


Impney Hotel & Exhibition Centre in Worcestershire and was sponsored Babcock Prime & Design 3i.


Doing business in the Royal Town

The recent local elections will soon be a distant memory and it is time to turn our attention to the exciting challenges of delivery. For the two year old Royal Sutton


Coldfield Town Council this is the time for us to find our feet. We are the largest Town Council in the


UK and as the level of local government closet to residents we have a real role to play in improving our Town. As important are the relationships we build with other local stakeholders not least the business community. I am proud of the relationships we have


formed with Sutton Chamber and with our local Business Improvement District. The challenges facing businesses in


Royal Sutton Coldfield are plenty and varied. As a Town Council we want to support in whatever way we can. The quality of transport and challenges of impending green belt development are shared. Equally the availability of quality office space and availability of well trained and quality employees are challenges for business that we recognise and will do our best to help with. The backgrounds of our councillors reflect


our roles in the local community. Many of my colleagues, who are all unpaid volunteers, have day jobs in the local business world. It is the skills and experiences that they are able to bring to their Council work that makes us able to empathise with the needs of business. We are far from career politicians but it is the diversity and experience we have that is so powerful. Royal Sutton Coldfield is a great place to


do business and to live – we are determined it should be even better and will work tirelessly over the next four years to deliver this.
