MOTHERS’ UNION – WROXHAM BENEFICE BRANCH For our April meeting one of our members, Rita Massingham, talked to us about her family, the Chamberlains, from Wroxham. Many local residents will remember the newsagents that Rita’s father had by Granary Staithe, which later moved to Church Road in Hoveton. Before that her grandfather had his shop in Castle Street, and of course Rita went to school in Church Lane. She has a remarkable collection of family records and photos, and we very much appreciated all that she brought along to show us. On May 15th
we shall be welcoming Maggie Dixon from Hoveton, who is coming to tell us
about the family support charity Spurgeons. She is involved with setting up a group at HMP Bure, and hoping that she may find some volunteers to join her. (See below for more details). Everyone (not just Members) is welcome to join us at St. Helen’s Church at 10.30 am. Please contact Suzanne Barnett, Branch Leader (782002) or Val Ovenden (782466) for more details or to arrange a lift.
FAMILY SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED HMP Bure, Coltishall, NR10 5GB
Spurgeons is a leading Children’s Charity helping to support disadvantaged children and families to find long lasting solutions to the challenges they face. Can you make a cup of tea, play with a child or listen? Volunteers are needed for the following roles: Visitor Centre: Meet and greet families, provide emotional support, serve refreshments, basic admin tasks, set up and clear away children’s activities. Visitors Centres are located within close proximity of the prison – this does not involve any contact with prisoners. Play: Within the Visits Hall (inside gates – prisoners present) engaging in play activities with children of all ages, allowing families space to talk. Availability Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. More information about flexibility from Visitor Centre Manager. All roles required enhanced DBS clearance and references arranged by Spurgeons. The Play role requires Prison Vetting Clearance. We are passionate about the work we do and need committed volunteers in our Team to help us achieve goals that really make a difference! WORLD DAY OF PRAYER This year’s WWDoP took place on Friday 2nd
March 2018, at St. Helen’s RC, Hoveton
and was one of over 5,000 services being held worldwide. It was such a pity that it coincided with the 3rd
day of the really bad weather at the end of February/beginning of March and we
thank those 4 determined souls who joined us at St. Helen’s for a very thoughtful and powerful service.
