BROADLAND CHESS CLUB Maybe at last we can start looking forward to the signs of Spring/Summer, as I write the weather presenters are predicting temperatures of 18 degrees, so maybe a day that I should be out in the garden rather than indoors on the computer.
This month we have had some more amazing results from the Junior section of our club. Paul Badger one of our most experienced members of the club now offers coaching on Monday nights to our Junior members and it definitely seems to be playing off.
The Norfolk Junior Chess Championships were held on Saturday March 17th at Sheringham and we must offer huge congratulations to Benjie Perry who has become the Under 11 Norfolk Champion who took the title by winning 5 out 6 of his games. Other members of the club also did extremely well with George Hall and Ferdinand Skoderack finishing equal first in the Under 9 competition, George took the title on tie-break. Benedict Ward scored 4/6 in the Under 14 and won the prize for the best performance by someone under the age of 12.
In a separate competition Ieysaa bin-Suhayl, aged 13, played in the East Anglian Chess Union Closed Championship and finished 2nd to International Chess Master Alan Merry, with whom he drew during the competition.
For the second year running BCC had two teams playing each other in the final of the Norfolk Rapidplay Handicap Final (28/03/18). The winning team was Broadland Swifts who won 5 games to 3 against the Broadland Swallow. The match consisted of two teams of four players, playing two games each lasting one hour, so thirty minutes on the clock for each player. This match once again gave the opportunity for lower ranked club members a chance to take part in a major league competition, so congratulations to all who took part. The Swifts consisted of Callum Fruish, Ewan Pashley, Justin Singh and Rupert Martin, the Swallows team members were Heather Wells, Darcey Pashley, Benjie Perry and Paul Coppard.
In the individual Club Championship Ken McEwan continues to be in the pole position with Roy Hughes in second place and David Owen in 3rd. In the Challengers Competition Bob Grindod is currently holding the first position with Adrian Cornell in second place. As always as this time of year approaches all of the inhouse competitions tend to heat up, alongside the Norfolk League and Cup competitions.
As always Broadland Chess club is pleased to welcome new members and visitors to the club which meets on a Monday and Wednesday, 19.30pm at the Kings Head public house at Coltishall. As we are getting busy now with club games and matches, it may be advisable to contact us first so that one of our members will have time to welcome you, you can find us on both Facebook and Twitter, or alternatively via our website.
