CONCERT SHOWCASES MASTERS OF THE BAROQUE
On Saturday 19 May 2018 at 7.30 pm North Norfolk Chorale will give a concert at St Peter and St Paul Church, Salle. It will feature works by two masters of contrasting strands of Baroque music: Purcell and Bach.
The choir will perform Henry Purcell’s first Ode to St Cecilia, “Welcome to all the pleasures”; an image of St Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, appears on the Chorale’s publicity. The concert will also feature the aria “Dido’s Lament”, from Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. The instrumental version of this piece will be familiar to many as one of the songs played by the massed bands at the Cenotaph every year on Remembrance Sunday.
From Purcell’s England we move to the German Baroque, and to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. His church cantata BWV9 “Es is das Heil uns kommen Her” (“It is our salvation come here to us”) was composed in the 1730s for the sixth Sunday after Trinity, while his motet BWV230 “Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden” (“Praise the Lord, all ye nations”) was published after his death and draws its text from Psalm 117.
Other works in the concert will include a performance of local composer Charles Damsan’s setting of “Proficiscere Anima Christiana”.
Tickets can be purchased (including early booking discount) at £13.00 each online at
north-norfolk-chorale.co.uk, or by calling 01692 405591. Online bookings will attract a small booking fee. Tickets may also be purchased on the door at the full price of £15.00.
Jonathan Dodd, the Musical Director of the North Norfolk Chorale, said “we are tremendously excited to be performing these works in the wonderful acoustics of Salle church. Do come and listen; you won’t be disappointed!”
The Chorale has also announced a series of concerts during the summer and late autumn of this year. More details will be given nearer the time, but the following dates and venues are planned: Friday 6 July: Blakeney Church
Saturday 7 July: North Elmham Church Friday 23 November: Stalham Church Saturday 24 November: North Walsham Church
Maggie Smyth, Chair of North Norfolk Chorale, said “we are looking forward to bringing the choir to the attention of new audiences in venues we have not sung in previously, and we warmly encourage people to come along and see us”.
