GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY This spring has certainly been different to last year, with the wet and the cold winds. Many plants and our seed sowing are later than normal. This is the latest that I have planted a lot of my vegetables in the last thirty years. When your bulbs finish, dead head them. When they die down, pull the leaves off and put them on your compost heap. Once the polyanthus and primroses have gone over, dead head them and, if necessary, divide your clumps up. Your perennials should be growing well, stake the taller varieties to support them. When your spring flowering shrubs, such as forsythia, flowering currant and viburnum tinus have finished flowering, prune them back. Dead head hydrangeas. Tie in new growth on wall shrubs and climbers. If you have any evergreens that have suffered wind or frost damage, you may need to prune out dead areas. Your lawns should be growing well by now. I know they took quite a hit early on. If they still look a bit yellow give them a feed. Trim them regularly and treat for any weeds with a selective weed killer. The veg garden may not look as good as it normally does. In my garden everything is behind. Once your potatoes show their heads and are tall enough, round them up. I use an iron rake, some people use draw hoes. Sow lettuce, radish and spring onions in short rows. Sow beetroot, peas and carrots in normal rows. Sow French and runner beans in the ground or, like me, in cell trays. Your broad beans should be growing well. When necessary stake and tie together with strings to stop them blowing over. At the end of the month, clear any spring bedding. Lift and dry tulips. Prepare containers for summer bedding. With the pond, keep filters and pumps clean. Add new fish if desired and feed daily. Enjoy your garden, especially plants like lilacs, rhododendrons and aquilegias this month. Michael Ottaway, Chairman
