Careers not courses: Claire Boliver College welcomes
chief executive South Staffordshire College has appointed Claire Boliver as its new chief executive principal, succeeding Graham Morley, who is stepping down after 10 years at the helm. Claire, who begins her new role, has
outlined her vision for the college to offer learners ‘careers not courses’ and ensure there is a curriculum that is right for the economy and communities it serves. Graham Morley paid tribute to his
colleagues at the college, saying: “I am immensely proud of all the successes and achievements of the staff.
‘I’ve spoken before about the need for further education to offer careers not courses’
“The board of governors has chosen an
exceptional leader in Claire. Her first-hand knowledge of the community and track record of delivering success places her in the strongest position, and I wish her, the college, and its learners every success in the future.” Claire began her further education career
at South Staffordshire College on a teaching placement. Over a number of years, she worked her
way up to become director of curriculum before moving to Wolverhampton College where, after just two years, she became the principal. One of her first moves will be to re-
launch a curriculum review to ensure the courses on offer align to the needs of the economy and community to enable learners to build successful careers. She said: “As a college we need to be
responsive and flexible to the needs of the economy and community we serve in our campuses in Lichfield, Tamworth and Rodbaston and indeed across the whole of South Staffordshire. “I’ve spoken before about the need for
further education to offer ‘careers not courses’ and this is the mind-set I wanted to bring into the college.”
46 CHAMBERLINK April 2018 i54: Local authorities are hoping investors will fund its expansion MP questions Arriva bus decision
Amanda Milling, Member of Parliament, has criticised Arriva for withdrawing Sunday bus services which run from the Cannock depot. The withdrawal of services has been described as a ‘real blow’ by the Cannock Chase MP, who is
concerned for residents who are reliant on public transport. Arriva have withdrawn a number of services across Cannock Chase following Staffordshire County Council removing their subsidy for some of the services. Following this recent announcement to withdraw Sunday services, Amanda Milling has written to
Arriva to express both her dismay and that of local residents. The Cannock Chase MP is seeking a meeting with Arriva to discuss the matter and the possibility of restoring Sunday services. Ms Milling said: “The news that Arriva have withdrawn some services and all of those that run from
the Cannock depot on Sundays, is a real blow to bus passengers across Cannock Chase. I have written to Arriva and called for a meeting to discuss these changes. “There are many people who rely on buses to get out and about and there is a real danger that they will be left stranded as a result of this decision.”
A business park in South Staffordshire could see its latest expansion funded by major investors, after being earmarked as one of five top priority development schemes in the West Midlands. The business park is i54, which is located just
north of Wolverhampton, adjacent to the M54. The development is already home to major manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover and MOOG Aerospace, and is the subject of a planned expansion. The first part of this would be built on 60
acres of land to the west of existing development, owned by Wolverhampton Council. The application to build on this land is due to be considered by South Staffs District Council this spring. Another 40 acres of land has been earmarked
to become part of this expansion, which could create around 2,700 jobs if it goes ahead. The i54 Western Extension is one of five schemes included in a £10bn investment prospectus announced at the MIPIM property
show in the South of France by West Midlands Combined Authority Mayor Andy Street. The others are: UK Central Hub and HS2
Interchange, a landmark project in Solihull; Birmingham Paradise, a commercial, retail, leisure and hotel development in the heart of the city centre which is already underway; Friargate Coventry, a new development in the city centre next to the mainline rail station; and Interchange Commercial District and Canalside Living Quarter, which is a residential, leisure and commercial scheme in Wolverhampton. Mr Street is hoping investors will beat a path
to his door to invest in these schemes, which he said were being built or planned on the back of ‘unprecedented investment being put into the region’s infrastructure’, including HS2. The Mayor said: “These are exciting times for
the West Midlands. “We are a region of growth and innovation
and we have all the fundamentals in place for successful investment along with the determination and talent to deliver.”
