We are delighted to have a very strong capability in the Midlands – we are the heartbeat of much that is being designed and constructed regionally at the moment and we do that by working with local, national and international clients, collaborators and investors. All of our people are excited about the transformational change in the Midlands region. As the third largest global office in Arup, we bring the value of our global capability and apply it to local context. Our 50 year celebration gives us a moment to reflect upon our
achievements but also to set a course for what we want to be successfully doing in the next 50 years as we make our ongoing contribution to growing the economy whilst actively involving ourselves with projects that improve our society and the livelihoods and wellbeing of the many that live in this region. Owned in trust for the benefit of our employees, we make clear
choices about what is important to us. We are driven by a set of Arup values that keep us focussed on the quality of what we do. We actively recruit in the region and each year we are delighted to bring in over 50 new graduates, degree apprentices and apprentices to build our workforce of the future. It is an exciting time for Arup as it is for
the region – we can be counted upon for helping this region revitalise its world class image of a great place to live, work and play. I wish to thank all Arupians past and present for their contribution – they should all feel immensely proud.
Mark Jones, Arup Midlands Leader
the detailed plans for the transformation of London Euston HS2 station and a major new HS2 interchange near Solihull. This will be pivotal to unlocking the benefit of UK Central; one of Europe’s largest regeneration opportunities. Although Arup Birmingham
office was established 50 years ago, a choice was made to consolidate their Midlands offices and move to a brand new Arup designed office on Blythe Valley, Solihull during 2001. This office is the third largest Arup office globally after London and Hong Kong and hosts 850 of the company’s 14,500 staff. The Arup Midlands capability has
been innovative in many ways over the period – most recently the UK Autodrive autonomous vehicle programme, where they bring technical and management insight to drive Connected and
Autonomous Vehicles (CAV). This builds upon their experience of innovative sustainable forms of transport including the Coventry and Birmingham Low Emission Demonstrator (CABLED) programme, an equally significant technology project for the region. As part of its 50 year
celebrations, Arup has developed a programme of events focused on its people and communities. Multiple events will take place including a commitment to provide 5,000 hours of volunteer time to a number of local Midlands charities. There will also be a world record
attempt to build the world’s longest wooden toy train track – currently 2,600 metres. Other events will include a panel discussion between retired Arup leaders and new graduates to remember its history and continue to reinforce its legacy.
