Greater Birmingham’s leading companies In Brief
A Birmingham-based corporate finance adviser is predicting a ten per cent rise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity during the year. Bracebridge Corporate
Finance, with offices in Snow Hill in central Birmingham, said that the market was set to pick up after a 13 per cent decline in 2017.
During last year, some 3,300
deals were announced, compared to circa 3,800 deals in 2016, representing a 13 per cent fall year-on-year. Bracebridge managing director
Andy Moore said: “As we predicted this time last year, we have seen a reduction in deal volumes in 2017 - our original prediction was circa 3,000 deals. This result was not surprising, given the uncertainty around Brexit. Our current view on the outlook for 2018 is that we will see an increase of around 10 per cent, taking deal volumes back up to circa 3,600 for the year and closer to the levels of activity seen in 2016. This is still significantly lower than the previous three years, but we are certainly seeing an upturn in deal activity.

The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is hoping that 2018 will turn out to be a memorable year – in more ways than one. The Arboretum already has more
than 250 events planned, including veterans’ associations reunions, seminars, educational talks, outdoor learning, and nationally important memorial dedications. This may grow further, with the
November opening of Aspects, a stand-alone £8m conference and events pavilion which complements the recently opened £16m Remembrance Centre. The new buildings are part of
major investment at the Arboretum, which also includes the £3.5m upgrade of the central Armed Forces Memorial and £1m of landscape and signage improvements. In addition, many new memorials
have been approved and will be dedicated, bringing the total on site to over 400. The new memorials will ensure that almost every branch of the Armed Forces, key conflicts, and other organisations

Arboretum prepares for blockbuster year
On air: Sarah Montgomery being interviewed by ITV about the Arboretum
that serve the country, are represented. Visitor numbers are also
predicted to grow, driven in part by dramatically improved provision for schools and colleges, plus mass participation events including RAF 100, World War One Centenary Commemorations, and the annual motorbike riders’ tribute – Ride to the Wall. The new facilities will accommodate 450,000 visitors a year, including some 25,000 young
people on organised visits. Sarah Montgomery, managing
director of the Arboretum, said: “There have been 10 years of hard work, by a remarkable team of people, to get us to this position. With thanks to our parent charity The Royal British Legion, funders such as the Heritage Lottery Fund, Staffordshire County Council, the Chancellor using LIBOR funds and many other bodies and donors, we have made our vision reality.”
JLR donates to hospital appeal
Jaguar Land Rover has donated £5,000 to an appeal by Solihull Hospital Charity for a new cancer unit at Solihull Hospital. The unit, which will form an extension of the existing
ward 19 cancer centre at Heartlands Hospital, will have places for an additional 31 patients. The donation from Jaguar Land Rover has helped
Solihull Hospital Charity towards its overall goal of £150,000. This will allow what is currently an empty ward to be
transformed into a space that has been specifically designed with patients in mind. Sharon Gray, secretary of the Jaguar Land Rover
Solihull charity committee, said: “It’s a lovely part of my job when I can tell people we’re making a donation to their cause. Helping towards the chemotherapy day unit at Solihull Hospital is a great way for us to support our community as so many of us are touched by cancer.”
