Da Vinci display certain to draw in the crowds

Twelve drawings of Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci are to go on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to mark the 500th anniversary of his death. The drawings will be on display

in February next year as part of 12 simultaneous exhibitions across the UK. Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in

Drawing is a nationwide event that will receive its widest UK audience to date. Around 144 of Da Vinci’s greatest

drawings from the Royal Collection are to form the 12 exhibitions. As the only venue in the Midlands, visitors to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) will see the intricacy of Leonardo’s work through 12 works never seen in the city before. Drawings on display will include

the Head of an Old Bearded Man (c.1517-18), and A Map of the Valdichiana (c.1503-4). The drawings in the Royal

Collection provide an unparalleled insight into Leonardo's investigations and the workings of his mind.

‘We are thrilled to be part of the Leonardo 500th anniversary celebrations’

The exhibition in Birmingham will

be accompanied by an engaging education programme which will help to bring Da Vinci’s techniques alive for visitors, along with a series of talks and tours. The exhibitions will include

examples of all the drawing materials employed by the artist, including pen and ink, red and black chalks, watercolour and metalpoint. They will also present new

information about Leonardo's working practices and creative process, gathered through technical research using a range of techniques including ultraviolet imaging, infrared reflectography and X-ray fluorescence. The findings are to form a

ground-breaking new book, Leonardo: A Closer Look, published by Royal Collection Trust in

February 2019. Gurminder Kenth, museum manager at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, said: “We are thrilled to be part of the Leonardo 500th anniversary celebrations showcasing the extraordinary talent and skill of one of the world’s greatest artists.

“When a selection of Leonardo

drawings were on display here at the museum in 2012, it was an extremely popular exhibition. “With a different selection of

drawings to display in 2019, we are sure visitors will be just as excited about this unique opportunity to see his works on show in the Midlands.”

Priory’s £4m facilities boost

BMI Healthcare has ramped up its investment in The Priory Hospital in Birmingham – by spending £4m on new facilities for patients and staff. The first phase of this investment includes the

development of a state-of-the-art cancer centre with new consulting rooms, patient pods for day case treatments and 10 en-suite inpatient bedrooms. A new dedicated MRI and CT centre on the ground

floor of the hospital will expand the variety of scans available and develop the imaging services already provided by the hospital, which in turn will help to diagnose a multitude of different conditions, including orthopaedic, spinal, oncological, cardiac, neurological, urological and gynaecological.

Renovation of the main entrance and lobby area will

also create a fresh, new look and better facilities to welcome patients to the hospital. The investment will also benefit patients at The

Priory’s sister hospital, BMI Edgbaston Hospital, on Somerset Road, Birmingham, as many of the consultants work across both hospitals and use the facilities of both sites. Tony Avery, executive director of BMI The Priory Hospital, said: “This substantial investment in new and improved services demonstrates our ongoing commitment to patients in the region, to continue providing them with the very best health care and technology possible.”

for SafeContractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business. SafeContractor accreditation will enhance the company’s ability to win new contracts, and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal. Alcumus SafeContractor is a

leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises extremely rigorous standards in health and safety management amongst contractors. It is used by thousands of organisations in the UK including SMEs and FTSE 100 companies.
