Seminar explores new data laws

NatWest has joined forces with a Coleshill-based IT firm to reinforce the growing number of warnings that businesses have been given about new data protection laws. The IT firm – Acutec – was

invited to take part in a seminar in partnership with NatWest’s Business Boost programme, with the aim of flagging up the importance of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is being implemented

by the European Union at the end of May. The NatWest seminar

warned businesses of the dangers of failing to take measures to protect personal data after GDPR becomes law. ACUTEC was invited by the

NatWest Business Banking team to give its take on the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and how businesses should be taking steps to ensure they are protecting personal data. Amy Staniszewski, digital

marketing specialist at Acutec, said: “GDPR comes into force next month and organisations are still confused about what they need to do. “There has been so much

scaremongering on this topic that it has got out of control. Businesses need to take a step back and start thinking about their data in a different way.”

Dota 2 live events attract thousands of fans

Arena Birmingham is to host an international computer gaming competition which carries a top prize of $1m. Thousands of fans are expected

to descend on the venue for three days next month as dozen of teams from around the world play ‘Dota 2’ (it stands for Defence of the Ancients), a sword and sorcery strategy game from the makers of ‘World of Warcraft’. The online phenomenon attracts

sell-out crowds who watch on giant screens. ESL – the Electronic Sports

League – is behind the tournament, which ran a similar event in Birmingham last year as part of another gaming show, EGX. This year’s event takes place on 25-27 May at the NEC, when 12

teams from across the world will battle it out for a share of a prize pool of $1m. James Dean, managing director

at ESL UK: “This is a dream come true for the ESL UK team and a fantastic win for the UK scene. “Dota 2 was the very first

tournament we ran just after starting up in 2012. We hope to make the Dota 2 community extremely proud. We look forward to being an integral part of the success of this event, and to the potential of having ESL One back in Birmingham next year.”

Andy Street, West Midlands

Combined Authority Mayor, said: “It’s tremendous news for the city to be playing host to such a prestigious international esports event. “Birmingham is renowned for

major sporting events such as the World Indoor Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games, so we very much look forward to welcoming the Dota 2 community. As the second largest city in the UK, Birmingham has a huge amount to offer and hosting the UK’s first Dota 2 Major adds to the city’s fascinating history. “With our unique canal-side

location, in one of the UK’s most vibrant cities, it’s the perfect place to bring the gaming community together.”

Royal visitors back bid to boost female workforce

The major skills shortage facing manufacturing businesses can be met by an expanding female workforce, according to the head of Birmingham’s Millennium Point which marked International Women’s Day with a visit by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In their first visit to Birmingham, Prince Harry and Ms Markle attended

the event at Millennium Point to celebrate International Women's Day, meeting young women from secondary schools as they took part in building apps and touchpads, before hearing more about their motivations to pursue science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. Millennium Point brought together 90 female students from secondary

schools to inspire them with opportunities in STEM fields. Several female leaders in engineering, information technology and finance, met students as part of an event in conjunction with STEMettes, the award-winning social enterprise. Judith Armstrong, CEO of Millennium Point, said: “Just 21 per cent of
