AIRCRAFT FACTORY AND RACE TRACK REVIVAL
B
rymor continues to make good progress with the reconstruction of the Wellington
Hangar. The roof is now complete and much of the cladding on the walls had been installed as this Bulletin went to press. The new floor slab was poured on 22nd March with over 40 concrete lor- ries delivering their loads and ‘power floating’ continuing through the night until 6.30am the next morning.
Although the north doors are now in place,
there has been a delay in hanging the south doors as a far-reaching search had to be carried out by the Project Team to find replacement wheels and runners due to the originals being too corroded to reinstall. An appeal on social media produced some useful leads and ultimately proved success- ful, although surviving door runners were found from the Bellman hangar which stood on the Rail- way Straight until demolished c2004 during Mer- cedes-Benz World's construction. Door runners from the Bellman and T.2 hangars at Corbie Wood mentioned in Denis Corley’s article in the last Bulletin were also considered, but reclaiming these would have been both challenging and risky and was therefore not pursued.
Work continues to restore the Finishing Straight, especially in the northern and southern transitional areas between the Straight and where the old Hangar slab was situated. The historic kerb running towards the Banking from the Flight Shed is also being recreated. The northern area of the Finishing Straight has recently been assessed for repairs and these will commence soon, using a special concrete mix that has been agreed by

Elmwood Projects, which recently finished work at the new Design Museum in London, has been appointed as the exhibition fit-out contrac- tors and will start work off-site soon. Specialist designers Aivaf will be developing and manufac- turing the interactive elements of the displays and we are looking forward to working with them on this exciting and important part of the project. Meanwhile, the Curatorial Team has started on script writing for the new displays.

aircraft and smaller items for the displays. A new temporary feature in the Paddock is the fuselage of the record-breaking Supermarine Swift WK198, which was carefully moved from the Finishing Straight near the AVRO Shed in early March, and it will soon receive its final, specially re-created factory yellow primer finish.
